Charles Avinger has taught courses in writing, literature, and education, working
with students ranging from eighth grade to eighty. He has published articles
about literature and teaching in a number of reference books, professional
journals, and other publications. In addition to teaching composition and
literature courses, Charles teaches specialized classes in horror/science fiction
and grammar.

Deborah K Bayer

Deborah Bayer, who holds a Bachelor of Arts and a Master of Arts degree from
Michigan State University, taught in San Diego and Bloomfield Hills prior to
coming to WCC in 1990. She enjoys teaching both writing and literature
courses, including composition, creative writing, short story and novel, poetry
and drama, and journal workshop. Each fall she coordinates the LAND Writing
contest for students (Information about LAND is available in the Writing
Center). In addition to teaching, Deborah writes short fiction. Her work has
appeared widely in literary magazines.

Edith (Edie) Croake earned her Bachelor of Arts degree at the University of
Michigan. After graduation she taught high school English in Chicago and Des
Plaines, Illinois and pursued graduate work at Northwestern University. She
returned to Ann Arbor because her husband was a graduate student at the
U-M. While teaching at WCC, she completed a Doctor of Arts in English at U-M.
She teaches composition, introduction to literature, children's literature, and
Shakespeare. Edie feels privileged to have worked with WCC students since the
college opened in 1966.

Margo Czinski has been teaching English as a Second Language (ESL), English,
and German since 1975. She received her undergraduate degree in German
and English from Michigan State University and her Masters in Linguistics from
the University of Michigan. At WCC she teaches ESL. Married with two sons,
Margo lives with her family outside of Ann Arbor, where they have geese,
ducks, chickens, and cats in the yard. She and her husband, Tom, love to
read, take walks, watch movies, and travel. Margo tries to make her classes
both challenging and enjoyable. Having studied two foreign languages, she
knows how much work it takes to become proficient, but she also knows the
importance of humor in the classroom.

Maxine (Max) Gibson is a long-time Ann Arborite. She received her bachelor's
degree from Eastern Michigan University with a major in English and a minor in
art. She went on to the University of Michigan, where she earned her Master of
Arts in English. Max began at WCC in 1990 and teaches composition, short
story, poetry, and creative writing. Max enjoys taking a personal approach to
writing, which she feels makes things more interesting for her students.

Susan K Glowski

Susan Glowski teaches all levels within the ESL program Washtenaw Community
College, as well as writing classes for native speakers of English. She earned
her Master of Arts at San Francisco State University and taught in the Adult
Education Program in Berkeley, CA, before coming to WCC in 1980. She has
written two texts, which are currently used at Washtenaw, and is working on a
third. She is married and has one grown daughter and a dog. She loves
traveling, spending time on the Huron River and walking in the woods.

Ruth Hatcher grew up on the south side of Chicago and earned her Bachelor of
Arts degree from Earlham College, a Quaker school in Indiana. She went on to
attend graduate school at the University of Michigan, and began teaching at
WCC in 1981. She teaches basic writing and African American literature and
loves working with her students.

Dr. Barbara J. Hunt teaches advanced composition, communication skills, and
African American literature. In the past, she has set up a job fair for
Washtenaw County women and most recently has developed a course that
focuses on the writing, music, and politics of the Harlem Renaissance.
William E James, Jr.

W.E. James, Jr. teaches African-American literature and English composition
and is a graduate of the University of Michigan and Wayne State University. He
has been published in several academic publications, including Ethnic
Reflections and Obsidian. Recently, he performed for Pitch Black Poetry,
Horizons in Poetry, Broadside Press, the African-American History Museum
Poetry Series, and Writers & Poets: The Hildelberg Project Poetry Festival. He
developed, produced, and participated in WCC's Black Poets and Writers
program and has had an important role other annual events. He has conducted
extensive research on African, Caribbean, and African-American folklore and
mythology, and has completed three manuscripts: The Saints of Kemet,
Georgia, and Not Another Revolutionary Poem.

Carrie Krantz Fischer received her Bachelor of Science degree from Edinboro
University, Pennsylvania, and her Master of Arts degree from Bowling Green
State University (Ohio). She was an English instructor at Bowling Green and
spent a year as the assistant director of Bowling Green's freshman composition
program before coming to WCC in 1992. Besides teaching composition at
WCC, Carrie also teaches a special section of short story and novel that
focuses entirely on women writers, as well as serves as director of the Writing
Center through the end of this summer.

Jean Miller received her Bachelor of Arts degree in English, with a humanities
minor, from Marygrove College in Detroit in 1970. She then went on to earn a
Master of Arts degree in rhetoric and writing from the University of Tulsa in
1977. For four years, from 1983-1987, she studied at Purdue University in the
rhetoric and composition doctoral program. Before coming to WCC in 1989,
Jean taught at many places, including the University of Tulsa, Tulsa Junior
College, Purdue University, Eastern Michigan University, and the University of
Toledo Community and Technical College. Jean loves teaching at WCC, and
she likes her class atmosphere to be relaxed and positive.

Lisa Veasey joined the WCC English faculty in 1995 as a part-time technical
writing instructor, and became a full-time faculty member in 1999. Prior to
1999, Lisa worked in the software computer industry as a technical writer,
project coordinator, technical trainer, and publications manager. As the
Scientific and Technical Communication Program advisor and instructor, Lisa
brings the real world of technical writing to the classroom. She holds two
degrees from Eastern Michigan University: a Bachelor or Arts degree in
English/Written Communication and a Master of Liberal Studies degree in
interdisciplinary technology.
