How can you decide which language is best?
These questions will help you find the language that fits your goals.
1. I'm earning an Associate in Arts degree and I'd like to choose a language to fulfill my Arts and
Humanities requirement. Which one should I choose?

You've already made one good decision. Most language courses will fulfill your secondary Arts and Humanities
requirement. When choosing a language ask yourself these questions.

1.Which languages are most useful in my area of study?
German, for example, is useful if you're going into business or industry; French might be your choice if you're
focusing on the arts.
2.Where do I plan to live and who would I like to work for?
If you're going south or west, Spanish is the language to choose. If you work for a company that is
expanding into the German market, that's the language for you.
3.Which language most appeals to me?
All other considerations aside, choose a language that appeals to you. Think about not only the sound of the
language but the culture, literature, and art associated with it.

2. I'm transferring to a four-year college that requires four semesters of a foreign language.
Should I begin studying a language now or wait until I transfer?

The global economy is becoming a reality. Many corporations have divisions all over the world and
workers often have to communicate with offices in other countries, travel, or even take temporary
assignments where the official language isn't English. If you plan on moving into a managerial position,
becoming familiar with another language could prove to be a great advantage.

Spanish continues to be the language most studied in the U.S. followed by French and German.
Your choice should depend on the area of the country you choose (see number 1 above), your preferences,
and information about who's doing business where as more companies become global and need translators or
language teachers.
