Danielle Kipness is a student in HUM 102 (Introduction to
Humanities II - Renaissance to the present) taught by Elisabeth
Thoburn. Originally from Manhattan, she moved to Ann Arbor to
be with her boyfriend, a University of Michigan student who was
also from New York. After taking classes toward an associate's
degree, Danielle has decided to stay and complete a degree
at WCC, even though her boyfriend has now moved back to New
York.
What makes WCC so appealing to you, Danielle?
I was trying to find a good school that fit my needs. I
have a learning disability and WCC provides good support for
that. I'm going to end up staying here to get my two-year degree
because I will never find a school like this anywhere else.
Why did you take HUM 102?
It's not something I would have taken, but I happened to meet
the teacher (Elisabeth Thoburn), and then decided to take it.
What impressed you about
Elisabeth Thoburn?
Her sense of caring and her giving me a sense of direction.
I had a good feeling about her personality and decided to go
with it.
And it's worked out?
Yes. I haven't met a bad teacher yet at this school.
Sean Heslin is a student in HUM 102 (Introduction to
Humanities II - Renaissance to the present), taught by Elisabeth
Thoburn. He plans to transfer to the University of Michigan and major
in business.
Why did you take HUM 102?
I enjoy the arts and wanted to understand more about them.
Has the class helped you with that?
Absolutely. In all walks of life, I'm now able to identify
art around me. I'm better at Jeopardy now, too.
What topic will you remember from this course?
All the Florentine artists from the Renaissance, and also
the city of Florence. I'm going there next spring, so now
I'll know exactly where I want to go and what I want to see.
And now I'll understand it.
Would you recommend this course to other students?
I have done that and I will continue to do it - mostly because
when I didn't have an interest in art it was because I didn't
understand it. Now I just can't get enough.
