Police Academy
Curriculum
The Police Academy curriculum is over 850 hours in length. You will be required to demonstrate via written and physical skill testing proficiency in seven areas:
  • Investigations and law
  • Patrol procedures
  • Detention and prosecution
  • Police skills
  • Traffic enforcement
  • Special operations
  • Computer/internet skills
Physical skill areas will be your greatest challenge! Physical skill components are:
  • Firearms
  • First Aid
  • Emergency Vehicle Operations
  • Subject Control (Defensive Tactics)
  • Physical Training
If failures occur in our Police Academy, they most often occur in the skill areas. The specific skill requirements are:
  • Firearms – qualify with a handgun, shotgun, and patrol rifle in full and lowlight conditions at distances up to 15 yards and demonstrate safe handling techniques, along with passing a written test
  • First Aid – pass written tests and demonstrate physical mastery of first aid techniques
  • Emergency Vehicle Operations (formerly known as Precision Driving) – pass a written test and pass within existing norms six driving exercises
  • Subject Control Techniques (formerly known as Defensive Tactics) – pass a written test and demonstrate skill mastery of thirteen dimensions of the MCOLES subject control curriculum
  • Physical Training – pass a written test and participate in the entire physical training curriculum. You must pass a physical test at an exit level established by MCOLES
All of the skill areas have mandated remediation and re-test protocols.
