Safety/Benefits: Work Related Injuries Transportation

Upon report of a work related injury, Campus Safety will respond and assess the situation to determine the extent of injury and make a recommendation to seek further evaluation and/or treatment.

The College is under contract with Business Health Services (in association with Saint Joseph Mercy Health System) to provide occupational medical services including treatment for work related injuries and illnesses. All initial evaluations regarding work related injuries and illnesses will be conducted through Business Health Services/ Saint Joseph Mercy Health System. Authorization for examination or treatment will be required.

Emergency Situations (all campus locations):
    Injuries/Symptoms include:
    • Chest pains
    • Loss of consciousness
    • Life/limb threatening injuries (severing or severe smashing, cut off of blood supply, possibility of losing limb)
    • Head injuries
    In the event of an emergency situation, the employee shall be transported by ambulance to Saint Joseph Mercy (SJM) Hospital emergency room (Hartland Center and Brighton employees may be transported to SJM Livingston).

    Authorization for examination or treatment will be verified by HRM or Safety and Security (via an authorization form) or through notification from the hospital.

Non Emergency Situations (Main campus)
    Injuries/Symptoms include:
    • Muscle pull or strains
    • Fractures
    • Cuts (needing stitches)
    • Minor pain or discomfort

    The employee shall be treated at Business Health Services during their regular business hours (Monday - Friday, 8am-6pm). Only during non business hours shall they be treated at Saint Joseph Mercy Hospital emergency room.

    Authorization for examination or treatment will be verified by HRM or Safety and Security (via an authorization form). The employee will be directed to HRM for authorization during regular business hours (Monday - Friday, 8am-5pm). During non business hours, Safety and Security will authorize treatment.

    A listing of Business Health Services locations and business hours is below.

    The employee may choose the following transportation options to Business Health Services:
    • The employee (or supervisor) may transport themselves, via personal vehicle. The employee may receive mileage reimbursement, however assumes liability for their own transportation.

    • The employee (or supervisor) may transport themselves, via College vehicle.
      • Any employee using a College vehicle must have clearance through Facilities Management. This includes a review of their driving record.
    • A cab service may be used for transportation at the expense of the College.
      • HRM will contact the cab company and provide authorization for transport during regular business hours. During non business hours, Safety and Security will provide contact authorization.
      • The employee will contact the cab company once the treatment/evaluation is complete. The cab contact information will be provided by the employee.
      • Please note: the cab company is authorized to provide transportation to and from the College off campus location and Business Health Services or Saint Joseph Mercy Hospital only.

    Injuries/Symptoms include:

    • Minor pain or discomfort

    In the event of a non emergency situation the employee shall be treated at Business Health Services during their regular business hours (hours may vary by location). Only during non business hours shall they be treated at Saint Joseph Mercy Hospital emergency room.
