Assistive Technologies & Semantically Correct Markup

This site was created using semantically correct markup. One reason we made this choice is so that if you use a recent version of a screen reading program you can navigate more easily. For example, you can navigate through headings using the following keystrokes:

  • H to cycle forward through the headings.
  • Shift + H to cycle backwards through the headings.

All tabular data are marked up with the appropriate supplemental information indicating column and row relationships. This allows users of screen reading software to move freely within a table without losing their context. All tables include both a summary of the data they contain and a caption.

All form elements are clearly tied to their labeling information. People using assistive technologies, as well as people using traditional web browsers, can easily navigate through forms on this website with their keyboard’s Tab key.

Acronyms & Abbreviations

This site uses many acronyms and abbreviations. Most instances are defined with the appropriate tags. If you are using screen reading software, we recommend that you turn on verbose readout for both acronyms and abbreviations. If you are using a modern web browser, acronyms and abbreviations are denoted with a dotted line under them. For more information on what a specific acronym or abbreviation stands for, you can touch the text with your mouse and a box will appear with a definition. View a complete list of all the acronyms and abbreviations used on this website.

Low Vision & Color Blindness

Font sizes on this website are expressed using relative units of measure. If you’re having trouble with the text size, you can increase it in most modern browsers by going into the View menu, selecting Zoom, and then selecting Zoom In. In older browsers, go into the View menu, select Text Size, and then select Larger or Increase.

The design of this website was tested for users who have various forms of color blindness, including deuteranopia, protanopia, and tritanopia. These users should not experience problems with the contrast or colors chosen for this site.

For a more "stripped-down" version of this website, you can set your browser to view the site without the style sheet. This will present pure content. You can do it with the Firefox browser by selecting the View menu, choosing Page Style, and clicking on No Style. Additionally, most modern web browsers allow users to override the default look of a website with fonts and colors they choose.

Standards Compliance

This site is built on valid XHTML 1.0 Strict for structure and CSS 2.1 for presentation. We are aware that a few pages will not return as valid XHTML 1.0 Strict documents due to the implementation of additional accessibility and security features. While validation is an important part of web development, we have concluded that accessibility and securing your private data are more important.

You need an up-to-date version of a web browser such as Firefox or Safari to get the most out of this website. However, because the content and presentation have been clearly separated, you should be able to access it with other browsers, too.
