  9. Nursing Care, the Environment, and Human Health Online Putting Caring into Action

Early on in nursing's history, leaders Florence Nightingale and Lillian Wald recognized the role of nurses in controlling the influence of the environment on health and advocated for clean environments. But have we truly fulfilled our role as environmental health activists as much as we've fulfilled our role as health providers? Are we providing nursing care in the most environmentally friendly way we can?
This independent study course, based on and including the "ANA's Principles of Environmental Health for Nursing Practice with Implementation Strategies", introduces RNs to the role of environmental health advocacy within the workplace and the community. It encourages gaining a working understanding of the relationship between human health and the environment and integrating this knowledge into your practice. By the end of the course, you will be able to describe the ANA's landmark Precautionary Principle, locate resources, organizations and coalitions that partner with nursing, use the verbiage in environmental health advocacy and much more. The information presented is applicable in all settings where RNs practice and provide care. Nurse educators, managers and leaders will also benefit.

Register online for this online, independent study. You need to have or be able to access at least a Pentium 4 PC or equivalent Mac computer with a high-speed Internet connection, a printer to print your certificate, and one of the following web browsers: IE 7.x or newer, Firefox 3.x or newer, Safari 3.x or newer. It also should have an up-to-date version of Adobe Acrobat Reader.
You will receive an e-mail with a link to the learning activity before the start date. To successfully complete the course you will need to achieve 80% or more correct answers on the post-test and complete an evaluation form within a month of the start date you select.
This class qualifies for 2.37 Contact Hours for nurses. Approval valid through June 29, 2013. Assigned ONA #15,083-I.
