  1. Reducing Complications in Pediatric Phlebotomy thru Improved Communication & Applied Best Practices Newborn Blood Screening & MI Bio Trust for Health Programs also included

    There are a number of special considerations, challenges and potential complications associated with pediatric and neonatal blood collection. Now you can strengthen your communication, interpersonal and critical thinking skills for reduced preanalytical errors, physiological complications and improved outcomes through applied best practices and standards. Through interactive activities using case scenarios, you will be able to confidently determine age appropriate identification, communication, immobilization, blood collection and pain intervention techniques for neonatal and pediatric patients. You'll also view and gain a deeper understanding of the Michigan Department of Community Health (MDCH) Newborn Screening and BioTrust for Health Programs.

    This interactive workshop will help pediatric nurses, nursing students, phlebotomists, patient care technicians, medical assistants and/or others who perform or are intending to perform newborn blood screening and/or pediatric phlebotomy in outpatient or impatient settings.

    Please arrive 15 minutes early to sign in.
    This class qualifies for 2.00 Contact Hours for nurses. Assigned ONA #14,896, approval valid through February 11, 2013. 1.5 additional contact hours from the MDCH for a cumulative total of 3.5. Phlebotomists who attend will receive a course completion certificate. For rules governing continuing education credits, phlebotomists should contact their certification board.

  2. RN Refresher Course Online Increase your confidence!!

    Prerequisite(s): Nursing degree, RN License (current, expired or attempted) and comfortable using a computer. Prior to registering (online registration only) for this course, please contact Lifelong Learning at 734-677-5085 or apoppe@wccnet.edu to request an application. A mandatory orientation where you will receive your eBook access code, software and workbook is scheduled for February 25, 2012, 1-3 pm at WCC in the Morris Lawrence Building computer lab room 126.

    Improve confidence, critical thinking and understanding of the most commonly encountered nursing management challenges of the adult patient in the medical-surgical setting. Accessible online, 24/7, the content includes a review of pathophysiology, patient assessment including a focused approach, the most up-to date medical-surgical collaborative care and nursing management, including prioritization, delegation, patient safety and evidence-based practice. Case studies are implemented for clinical decision-making exercises. Audio and animated visual clips, slides, and summaries of the key points complement the e-book and a variety of learning styles.
    A companion virtual hospital is where you'll work with multiple complex patients collecting assessment data, completing documentation, and safe medication administration. Optional open labs on the WCC campus are offered where you can practice skills such as trach suctioning, Foley catheter placement, etc. Enjoy a lab enhanced, self-paced, online learning experience while increasing your confidence!

    Register online. The eBook works best with Internet Explorer or Foxfire, with Windows Vista, XP, 2000 or Mac OSX (up to 10.6.1). You will need to download and install (available at no charge) Adobe Acrobat Reader, Flash & Shockwave Players and Apple QuickTime onto your computer, if they are not already installed. You will spend approximately twenty hours per week for twelve to sixteen weeks in the online learning environment starting on February 25. Successful completion is measured by achievement of 75% or higher on the tests and participation in the discussion board questions.

  3. Transforming Musculoskeletal Pain with Acupressure Relief at Your Fingertips!

    For thousands of years people from the Far East have used the gentle hands-on techniques of acupressure---as well as
    acupuncture needles---to stimulate the therapeutic effects of the acupoints on the body. The purpose of this program is to provide participants with an introduction to Traditional Chinese Medicine's medical paradigm and hands-on acupressure approach to relieving stress and localized musculoskeletal pain. During the interactive workshop, you will locate twelve general pain and inflammation-relieving points along the organ meridian pathways; twelve acupoints for relief of localized musculoskeletal pain; and several reactive auricular points which correspond to the body. Leave feeling refreshed after experiencing the simple and gentle Chi Gung breathing, visualization and movement exercises to encourage blood flow to affected tissue as well as provide stress and pain relief. Transform your musculoskeletal pain!

    Esther is a member of the Michigan Holistic Nurses Association and a board member of the Metro Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Support Group. She is founder of Core Health Institute, a sole proprietorship, to disseminate knowledge about Chinese Medicine.

    Please register by February 13; arrive 15 minutes early on the day of the workshop to sign-in. To receive a certificate of attendance, participants must attend the entire event and complete an evaluation form.
