  1. Adolescent Depression Social Work Interventions

    Learn to recognize the signs, symptoms, causes, and risks associated with adolescent depression and to compare and contrast these with depression in adults. Gain insight into appropriate approaches to take with teens and their families, taking account of diverse cultural differences. Examine the relationship between teen depression and suicide and focus on effective interventions. Learn the differential diagnosis of various forms of depression (major clinical depression, dysthymia, seasonal affective disorder, and situational depression), and contrast intervention and treatment modalities for depression with those for bipolar disorder. Interventions will focus on a range of treatment options, including therapy, medication, lifestyle changes, and alternative and complementary treatments, as well as how these can be carried out in a variety of treatment settings, including schools, hospitals, community mental health agencies, mental health clinics, and private practices.

    More African-Americans are utilizing psychotherapy than ever before. Unfortunately, many continue to distrust and have disdain for these services. In large part this is due to the historic backdrop of racism and discrimination in this country, as well as a history of bias that has plagued the mental health profession itself. Learn the history of African-Americans in mental health treatment to better understand the possible concerns many have when seeking treatment. Explore cultural issues that hinder many professionals from helping this population, and learn ways to better serve it.

  3. Aging in the Gay Community Who Are These "Invisible" Older Adults?

    Learn what it means to be a lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender (LGBT) older adult. Review the similarities and differences in aging among LGBT older adults and their heterosexual counterparts. Older adults who are LGBT are often less recognized, if not invisible, and you will most likely not know which of your older adult clients and patients are LGBT. Review state and federal legal policies that affect the lives of LGBT older adults, as well as what the NASW Standards for Cultural Competence in Social Work Practice says (and does not say) about serving LGBT clients and patients. Explore techniques and strategies for working with LGBT older adults in this multimedia class that includes individual and partnered group exercises, viewing of pertinent movie clips, and a valuable list of suggested readings.
