Medical Transcriptionist Certificate

If you’d like to become a medical transcriptionist — whether in your own home or as an employee of a hospital or other medical facility — the two-part Medical Transcription series of classes can provide the necessary training.

The self-paced classes focus on exercises that involve actual transcriptions from physicians in various specialties. You have one year to finish the two classes, and will receive a certificate upon successful completion. The program is accredited by the Association for Healthcare Documentation Integrity.

The classes include access to BenchMark Knowledge Base, a browser-based application that’s a portal to a wide range of medical resources. They include the medical reference library from Stedman’s, a national physician and dentist database, a database of more than 250 normal lab values, national quality alerts that highlight common transcription errors, and more.

Demand for medical transcriptionists is strong. The latest estimate from the U.S. Department of Labor predicts a 14 percent growth in medical transcription jobs between 2006 and 2016 — faster growth than the average for all jobs.

Additional information on materials, class requirements, and support is available. Download the supplemental information.

A limited number of scholarships are available, with eligibility based on financial need. Download the Medical Transcriptionist Scholarship Application Form for details.
