Organic Gardener Certificate

Whether you’re a home gardener or a professional landscaper, obtaining the Organic Gardener Certificate will give you the knowledge and skills needed to establish and maintain vegetable and ornamental gardens organically.

To receive the certificate, you must take eight required classes, pass a final exam, and complete 20 hours of volunteer work. WCC and the Ann Arbor area’s Project Grow offer the certificate. If you’re pursuing the certificate, register for the "Organic Gardening Certificate" eight-class package.

  1. Organic Gardening: Easy Organic Fruit Growing

    Have you ever eaten a pawpaw, serviceberry, or wild black raspberry? There are many perennial and woody fruiting plants that grow easily in Southeast Michigan. This class is an overview of how to incorporate easy-to-grow fruiting plants such as berries, vines, shrubs, fruit trees, and lesser known fruiting plants into your home landscape. The class emphasizes growing fruit organically with very little hard work.

    Organic Gardening Certificate students must buy a course manual, which is only available at the WCC Bookstore. Non-certificate students must either purchase the entire manual or buy separate course packs for individual classes.
    This class qualifies for 0.20 Continuing Education Units or Hours of Training provided by Washtenaw Community College.

  2. Organic Gardening: Landscaping with Native Plants

    Bring nature a little closer to home by using native plants in your landscape. Whether you have small residential gardens or larger-scale meadows and woodlands, native plants can boost the health and diversity of your local ecology. Learn all aspects of landscaping with native plants, from planning and plant selection to installation and maintenance. Receive useful local information, resources, and reference material.

  3. Organic Gardening: Organic Lawn Care

    In this class, we'll look at turf grass from an ecological perspective, learning how to cultivate a lawn "ecosystem" that supports strong and healthy grass that is resistant to pests, diseases, and weeds. Topics include turf grass biology, selecting turf grass species, maintenance, fertilization, lawn repair, solving lawn problems, and organic weed, pest, and disease management. Receive valuable local information, resources, and reference materials.

    It's easier than you think to safely and effectively control pests and diseases using organic methods. Learn how to identify pests and diseases and minimize or even eliminate their damage using organic prevention and control methods that emphasize keeping soils and plants healthy.

  5. Organic Gardening: Organic Vegetable Gardening

    Learn organic vegetable garden design and planning, including site selection, bed layout, crop rotation, and plant spacing. Get detailed information on crops including local planting dates, seed starting, recommended varieties, cultural requirements, and harvesting tips. In addition, gardening in small spaces and saving your own seeds will be discussed.

  6. Organic Gardening: Organic Weed Management

    Tailor weed-control strategies to specific plants without using pesticides. Identify common weeds and invasive plants of southeast Michigan in landscapes, vegetable gardens, and natural areas. Learn weed prevention strategies and organic control methods for these pesky plants.

    Organic Gardening Certificate students must buy a course manual, which is only available at the WCC Bookstore. Non-certificate students must either purchase the entire manual or buy separate course packs for individual classes. The required book, "Newcomb's Wildflower Guide" ISBN-10: 0316604429 is also available at the WCC Bookstore and should be brought to the first class session.
