Health Care Professionals

Phlebotomy Certificates and Continuing Education

Phlebotomists work directly with patients of all ages and have the important responsibility of collecting blood specimens from patients in clinics, hospitals and in their homes. They must be accurate and excellent communicators, set high standards for themselves and be deeply committed to quality healthcare delivery. A positive and professional attitude and excellent interpersonal skills are extremely desirable in today’s job market.

We offer two classes each semester that award certificates of completion. Choose the class that matches your background and goals. Partial tuition scholarships are available for qualifying individuals.

Persons without a healthcare background can immediately become nationally certified by successfully completing our thirty-nine contact hour “Phlebotomy Fundamentals & Certification Preparation” class. This class includes an online certification exam.

As a practicing healthcare professional, your needs may be met with “Phlebotomy Skills: Accelerated for Healthcare Professionals”, sixteen contact hours in duration. After working for one year as a phlebotomist, you could potentially sit for a certification exam through qualifying certification organizations.

The following details and requirements apply to both classes:

  • The essential skill requirements are manual dexterity in both hands and normal color vision. You should possess these skills or be able to demonstrate the ability to perform them with the help of compensatory techniques, assistive devices, or other reasonable accommodations. If you need accommodations, call Learning Support Services at 734-973-3342 or visit the Learning Support Services website.
  • You must have the ability to read, write, and accurately communicate in English. With the widespread use of electronic medical records, basic computer skills are recommended.
  • 100% attendance at all class sessions is required. You must achieve a cumulative score of 75% or greater on quizzes; the final written exam; and achieve a score of 75% or higher on the final practical exam demonstrating competency in venipuncture.
  • Under the instructor’s supervision, you will practice on lifelike latex arms, then on each other. Because you will draw and handle blood, there is a risk of accidental exposure. If you’re exposed to blood or experience any adverse reaction, you must pay for any medical care. Health insurance can be purchased from Student Assurance Services.
  • You will need to wear clean scrubs, closed toe shoes and provide your own nitrile (non-latex gloves).
  • You should not take this class if you’re pregnant or breastfeeding. If you have anemia or a latex allergy, or have had a mastectomy, consult with your physician before either class.

We also offer a new workshop for continuing education “Reducing Complications in Pediatric Phlebotomy through Improved Communication and Applied Best Practices.” Please see the Nursing and Healthcare section of the website for this and other classes that may fulfill your continuing education needs.

  3. PICCs, Ports & Other Central Lines Preserving Your Patient's VADs

The chance that you will encounter a patient with a PICC, port or other central line is increasingly high. The good news is you can prevent and/or recognize adverse events early through implementation of proper technique and best practices. Learn the most current guidelines, standards of care and best practices developed by a number of leading healthcare organizations and associations through this interactive workshop presented by Deanna Skicki BSN, RN, CRNI, part-time faculty, member of a local hospital vascular access team, the Infusion Nurses Society, Association for Vascular Access and the Michigan Vascular Access Network.
