Phlebotomy Skills Professional Certificates
Phlebotomists work directly with patients of all ages and are responsible for collecting blood specimens from patients in clinics, hospitals, and their homes. They must set high standards for themselves and be accurate in their work, excellent communicators, and deeply committed to quality health care delivery. A positive and professional attitude and excellent interpersonal skills are extremely valuable in today’s job market.
You can earn a phlebotomy certificate of completion by successfully completing a single class. Two different classes are available; choose the one that matches your background.
The following details and requirements apply to both classes:
- You must have manual dexterity in both hands; normal color vision; and the ability to read, write, and communicate in English.
- With the widespread use of electronic medical records, basic computer skills are recommended.
- You will practice on lifelike latex arms, then on each other under the instructor’s supervision. Because you will draw and handle blood, there is a risk of accidental exposure. If you’re exposed to blood or experience any adverse reaction to venipuncture, you must pay for any medical care. You can buy health insurance from Student Assurance Services.
- You must bring to class boxes of non-latex gloves, which are available at most pharmacies.
- You must wear clean scrubs and closed-toe shoes.
- To be eligible for a certificate of completion in either class, you must attend all of the class sessions and score at least 75 percent on quizzes and on the final practice exam demonstrating competency in venipuncture.
- Reasonable accommodations will be made for people with disabilities. However, the student is expected to perform in a reasonably independent manner. The skills listed here are essential requirements. Students should possess these skills or be able to demonstrate the ability to perform them with the help of compensatory techniques, assistive devices, or other reasonable accommodations. If you need accommodations, call Learning Support Services at 734-973-3342 or visit the Learning Support Services website.
- You should not take this class if you’re pregnant or breastfeeding. If you have anemia or a latex allergy, consult with your physician before taking the class.
