Sewing Professionals

Sewing Professional Certificate

Acquiring professional sewing skills can open the door to a new career or simply allow you to save money and be “greener” by constructing, altering, and mending clothes and sewn items for your home.

You can earn a certificate by completing four required classes and 10 contact hours of elective classes. The required classes are:

  • Sewing Fundamentals Level 1
  • Sewing Fundamentals Level 2
  • Sewing: Alterations, Mending, and Repair
  • Sewing: Patterns That Fit

Fulfilling the required classes will qualify you to take in mending and do minor alterations, or possibly to work for a dry cleaner or tailor. The elective classes, which will cover subjects ranging from upholstery sewing to pattern making, will provide a start in a specific track.

  1. Sewing: Alterations, Mending and Repairs

    Prerequisite(s): Sewing Fundamentals Level 1 or equivalent experience.

    Does it pain you to throw away great clothing because it doesn't fit like it used to, or got damaged? Do you pass up great bargains at clothing stores and thrift shops because they need hemming or repair? Promote sustainability starting with your own wardrobe. People throw away thousands of dollars worth of quality apparel that could be repaired or reworked into beautiful, wearable clothes. In this very hands-on class, you'll learn professional-level mending and alteration skills so that you can take in, let out, shorten, lengthen and repair garments.

    You must bring a sewing machine (and the manual, if you have it), sewing shears, hand sewing needles, pins and a pin cushion, a quilter's chalk pencil, a measuring tape, and a seam ripper. It's also recommended that you bring a 6" gauge and small sewing scissors. Students will create a resource folder of sewing samples to be used for future reference. This class is required for those seeking the Sewing Professional Certificate. The required book, "The New Complete Guide to Sewing: Step-by-Step Techniques for Making Clothes and Home Accessories (Reader's Digest)", ISBN 9781606522080, is available at the WCC Bookstore. No class 7/3 or 7/5.
    This class qualifies for 1.80 Continuing Education Units or Hours of Training provided by Washtenaw Community College.

  2. Sewing: Pillows and Cushions

    Prerequisite(s): "Sewing Fundamentals: Level 1," "Basic Machine Sewing," or equivalent experience working with fabrics and using hand and machine sewing techniques.

    Do you have a square or rectangular cushion that needs recovering? Or maybe you'd like to bring some new life to your decor with pillows that pop! Draft the pattern, choose and cut the fabric, insert a zipper (or add buttons) and piping for a professional, finishing touch. Alternative embellishments will be discussed as time allows.

    Bring a cushion or pillow form to the first class meeting, if you already have one. A detailed list of tools and supplies will be provided at the first class meeting. You must bring a working sewing machine, sewing shears, fabric and notions starting the 2nd class meeting, This class is an elective for those seeking the Sewing Professional Certificate.
