    Persons with disabilities often live in poverty because of a lack of access to a full array of needed supports, benefits, and services. Levels of these supports and services have not kept pace with the community need or what is required to fully participate as a citizen. Examine different financial and related programs based on eligibility for your clients with disabilities including developmental disabilities and mental illnesses. Explore best practices in advocating for and partnering with a person and their family as they experience the maze of bureaucratic regulations, definitions and forms. The benefits and supports are there — it's getting them in place that is the challenge!

  2. African-Americans & the Mental Health Profession Perspectives for Social Workers

    More African-Americans are utilizing psychotherapy than ever before. Unfortunately, many continue to distrust and have disdain for these services. In large part this is due to the historic backdrop of racism and discrimination in this country, as well as a history of bias that has plagued the mental health profession itself. Learn the history of African-Americans in mental health treatment to better understand the possible concerns many have when seeking treatment. Explore cultural issues that hinder many professionals from helping this population, and learn ways to better serve it.

Discuss treatments used with children and how adults with Asperger's cope. Examine the affects of Asperger's on the dynamics of the family system.     Examine current research about children and divorce and gain an understanding of the current thinking in the field including research on attachment theory and exposing children to violence. Explore some of the concerns children have during a divorce, such as whether their basic needs will be met, their relationship with friends, concern over loss of love and about becoming an object of anger and then learn how to help parents address these concerns during the divorce process. Learn about the effects divorce has on child development at various stages and ways to provide positive support to help parents meet their children's developmental needs before, during and after a divorce.

Learn the symptoms and causes along with the concept of compassion fatigues as secondary post traumatic stress disorder. Do you know the stages of loss and grief, how to be compassionate and supportive at each stage, and how to help clients cope effectively during these changes?
