Focus on the interface of the individual with emotion dysregulation and an invaliding environment which can result in Borderline Personality Disorder.   4. Effects of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder in Children and Adolescents

    Children and adolescents who have entered the social service or court system have a higher percentage than their peers of having been exposed to, or been victim of single or multiple traumatic events. How the child responds to the trauma is directly related to the environment the child lives in, how chronic the trauma is, and the availability of healthy support systems. Learn the basic concepts of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and examine current research on PTSD in children or adolescents. Examine the short and long term effects of PTSD and understand the various approaches to treatment. Learn how you can become an effective advocate for young survivors of trauma.

  6. Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders The Impact in Our Communities

    People who were exposed to alcohol while in utero are faced with a lifetime of cognitive, physical and social challenges. It is estimated that 1 to 2% of the population have a fetal alcohol spectrum disorder and the 70% of children in foster care are impacted by prenatal alcohol exposure. People who are fetal alcohol affected are institutionalized at a rate of 60% in either a mental health care placement or prison. Examine the spectrum of these disorders, the impact of prenatal alcohol exposure on the developing brain, the primary and secondary disabilities associated with FASD and how social workers can support families and persons with FASD to be contributing members of their communities.

  9. Interventions with Adolescent & Young Adult Males Gender Identity & Sexualized Violence

    Adolescent and young adult men encounter a range of powerful biopsychosocial forces that interact with, reinforce, and shape their developing gender identities in important ways. Some of these interactions can have profound effects on young men's capacities for mature adult intimate and sexual relationships and can contribute to sexualized violence, such as rape and intimate partner violence. Learn about the forces at work in shaping the concept of masculinity in young men and the implications for society. Examine the theoretical, research, and clinical material concerning the intersections between gender identity development and sexualized violence. Discuss implications for social workers who work with adolescent and young adult males as you learn ways to apply this knowledge to clinical social work interventions.
