  1. Practicing Mindful Therapy Application and Practical Methods

    Would you like to introduce mindfulness skills to your clients? Do you already bring these interventions into your therapy sessions and wish to expand your use of them? This class will give you a better understanding of mindfulness therapy and how, when, and if to use it. Come prepared to discuss case examples, learn through role plays, and share your experiences. We will also do practices together that you can teach your clients. Previously taking the WCC class Mindfulness Therapy: An Introduction is strongly suggested, but not a prerequisite.

    Learn ways to recognize that a person might be having thoughts of suicide, and ways to engage in direct and open talk with them. SafeTALK is designed for anyone in the community and focuses on suicide alertness and creating a suicide-safer community. Explore ways to move quickly to connect people with those trained in suicide intervention and who can provide first aid interventions.

  3. Social Work One-Day Conference on Ethics & Pain Management: Cyberbullying Ethical and Legal Considerations of Intervention and Prevention

    This registration is for a package of three (3) classes offering multiple continuing education hours in both ethics and pain management. Lunch is included in the cost. A total of 5 hours of ethics and 1 hour of pain management continuing education hours will be awarded. Classes included in this registration are:

    Ethical & Legal Considerations of Intervention and Prevention of Cyberbullying (2.5 CE hours):
    The internet and social media have created an emerging practice area some call cyber social work. Cyber social work practice is needed to provide cyber bullying prevention, counseling to targets (victims), and internet safety and awareness education. Learn about local/national/international cases of cyberbullying, especially related to educational organizations, the ethical and legal challenges it presents, the ethical and legal limitations of client privacy and confidentiality, and how social workers and others can monitor their personal digital reputations while reducing their risk for cyber bully attacks. Whether the issue is texting, sexting, blogging, email, Twitter, Facebook and more, there are ethical and legal considerations for the profession that have just begun to emerge and that are sure to be an ever increasing area of practice.

    Chronic Nonmalignant Pain (1 CE hour):
    This class provides social workers with an overview of contemporary pain management by covering the background, approaches and issues associated with chronic pain assessment and treatment selection.

    Ethical Standards and Principles (2.5 CE hours):
    This course provides attendees with a basic understanding of ethics, ethical challenges and the importance of cultural diversity for social workers. Consideration is given to defining ethics and understanding how values are at the core of ethical concerns. The class covers ways to apply ethical practices to both macro and clinical practices and looks specifically at the National Association of Social Workers Code of Ethics. Finally, options for further help and additional resources will be discussed.

    Ethics and Aging (2.5 CE hours):
    Explore the aging process, the role of the social worker working with older adults and the types of ethical issues and dilemmas they will face. Explore the importance of the older adult as an individual, and the types of considerations that make for good decision making when working with this population. Examine ethical problems that may arise when considering things like aging-in-place, working with families, medical or long term care, and end-of-life.

    Medical & Legal Ethics and Dilemmas in Health Care (2.5 CE hours):
    Examine the background and understanding of basic principles in health care ethics from the clinical and managerial perspectives as it relates to the dilemmas and concerns of a human service agency. Look at potential conflicts and dual relations in the service delivery process as you explore and develop skills to critically analyze conflicting ethical positions. Apply these principles to contemporary medical legal issues that managers face in health care settings each day, such as confidentiality and management of health care information (including new HIPPA regulations); informed consent; competency; ethical considerations in resource allocation; life support; end of life decisions and research. Medical codes of ethics and professional liability issues will also be covered.

  6. Tools & Techniques for "Doing" Therapy Effective Methods for Improving Your Practice

    Sharpen the skills you use for "doing" while learning tools and techniques to improve your practice. Review three models of therapy and specific techniques for engaging in psychotherapy. Explore the models of motivational interviewing, stages of change, and cognitive behavioral therapy. Examine therapy techniques including journaling, cognitive restructuring, relaxation, progressive relaxation, use of metaphor, and refocusing the child in this largely experiential class.

  7. Understanding the Mind-Body Connection Helping Clients with Physical Health Problems

    Examine psychoneuroimmunology (the mind-body connection) and holistic health (a mind-body-spirit approach to wellness) in this introductory class. Begin to understand how thoughts, beliefs, and emotions affect one's physical health and vice versa. Learn how "Negative" thoughts and emotions can be causal contributors to physical ailments, can exacerbate current symptoms, and can prevent people from making positive lifestyle changes that would improve their well-being. Explore how a diagnosis of a chronic or serious illness can also elicit fear, anxiety, sadness, and depression, which, in turn, can stifle the healing process. Gain an understanding of tools that can be used for assisting clients dealing with physical diseases, helping them participate in their own healing or empowering them to improve their quality of life.
