  1. 19th Century Women in Washtenaw County "Her" story in "His" Story

In "To Kill a Mockingbird", Atticus tells his children that there is more than one way to turn a person into a ghost. He was referring to Boo Radley, of course; however, he could have just as easily been referring to women in history. "Factual" history books, novels and the media have sometimes distorted the reality of women's lives by either eliminating or stereotyping them. This series of discussions about 19th century women should provide some corrective balance. We focus on the history and experiences of Washtenaw County women who illustrate national trends.

No preparation is needed to participate. No class 10/26.

  2. African-Americans & the Mental Health Profession Perspectives for Social Workers

More African-Americans are utilizing psychotherapy than ever before. Unfortunately, many continue to distrust and have disdain for these services. In large part this is due to the historic backdrop of racism and discrimination in this country, as well as a history of bias that has plagued the mental health profession itself. Learn the history of African-Americans in mental health treatment to better understand the possible concerns many have when seeking treatment. Explore cultural issues that hinder many professionals from helping this population, and learn ways to better serve it.

This class qualifies for 3.00 Contact Hours approved by the Michigan Social Work Continuing Education Collaborative. For more information, visit Social Worker Professional Continuing Education.
