  1. African-Americans & the Mental Health Profession Perspectives for Social Workers

    More African-Americans are utilizing psychotherapy than ever before. Unfortunately, many continue to distrust and have disdain for these services. In large part this is due to the historic backdrop of racism and discrimination in this country, as well as a history of bias that has plagued the mental health profession itself. Learn the history of African-Americans in mental health treatment to better understand the possible concerns many have when seeking treatment. Explore cultural issues that hinder many professionals from helping this population, and learn ways to better serve it.

    Every beer producing country in the world has its own unique beer history and traditions. This class is a whirlwind tour of the histories and types of beers brewed in Mexico, Germany, Ireland, Belgium, Russia, Poland, and the United States.

  4. Fresco: Its History & Technique Shake Hands with Michelangelo!

    In this new workshop, students not only discover the history of fresco but also create their own small frescos to take home. First, we learn what fresco is and how it differs from other painting media. Then we go through the whole process of designing a fresco, building small and medium frames, mixing plaster, and painting it ourselves.

    The story of our fruits and vegetables is the story of people-explorers, colonizers, missionaries, conquerors, plant hunters, botanists, and frontiersmen-who carried seeds and shoots and plants around the world. "As American as apple pie," the saying goes, but apples aren't American and neither are peaches, pears, or peas. However, the Americas contributed much to the world. Learn what common fruit we eat nearly every day that was declared a vegetable by the U.S. Supreme Court. What common vegetable did English women wear in their hair? Come find out so you can share with others.

    This advanced class builds on skills already developed and stresses conversation between the students, not just between a student and the instructor. The focus is on pronouns and integrating them with our previous study of verbs and nouns. We'll explore Italian culture, history, and norms, and students will discuss these topics in Italian.
