WCC Recognized for Social Worker Training

WCC’s LifeLong Learning department has received a Special Project Award for the Social Work Conference it held earlier this year. The Michigan Association of Continuing Education and Training presented the award on Aug. 13. WCC was selected for the honor from a field of other two-year colleges that included Monroe, Macomb, and Oakland community colleges.

“WCC has been offering continuing education for social workers since 2007,” said Monique James, LifeLong Learning director. “We sponsored our first annual Social Work Conference in April 2010 for social work professionals in education and health care settings, and we had 125 in attendance. The sessions addressed ethical practices, pain management, and cultural diversity, and the conference offered networking opportunities for participants. We received new course ideas from those who attended and identified individuals who might serve as instructors.”

The Michigan Social Work Continuing Education Collaborative also has recognized the quality of WCC’s social worker training. It has given the LifeLong Learning department a provider number that it can use for all future classes, eliminating the need to go through the arduous task of pre-approval for new continuing education classes. This means that WCC meets or exceeds quality standards in instruction and curriculum. WCC is one of the only two-year colleges in Michigan to receive this kind of blanket approval.

“These professionals must take a certain number of continuing education units to maintain their credentials, and we offer 20-25 seminars each term,” said James. “We are known for our quality program and the reasonable fees associated with it. Participants also like our campus.”

The award-winning conference for social workers returns to WCC in April 2011. The College is looking to expand its continuing education conferences to every area of clinical and administrative social work practice, including nursing home administration, James said.
