Registration Starts March 16 for Spring/Summer 2011 Semester

Being prepared when registration starts for WCC’s Spring/Summer Semester can help students avoid getting delayed during the process, according to Kathy Currie, director of student records.

Registration for Spring/Summer Semester starts Wednesday, March 16, for current and readmitted students. Registration for new students starts one week later on Wednesday, March 23.

A schedule of credit classes is available on WCC’s website. Most Spring/Summer classes start May 9, although some begin May 31 and others on June 15. The later start dates—especially June 15—are designed to help new high school graduates get a head start on their college careers.

Preparation before registration begins is especially important for transfer students, Currie said. The key for them is getting prerequisite overrides approved before registration begins.

The Course Prerequisite Check lets students check prerequisites for a class and, if they feel that they meet them, apply for a prerequisite override online. It’s available through MyWCC, the same system that students use to register for classes.

“It’s to your advantage to get that done so you’re ready to go,” Currie said. She said transfer students should submit the requests as soon as possible so they don’t run into hang-ups when they try to register for classes.

Currie also noted that new and readmitted students must come into WCC to present official government documents that verify their identity and residency before they can register. Students should bring in their documents as soon as possible after WCC processes their application. The requirement does not apply to current students.

In addition to the Course Prerequisite Check, students have two other online tools to help them build their schedules through MyWCC:

Registration Times Are Staggered

Current and readmitted students have staggered registration start times on March 16. The times are based on the overall number of credit hours earned, either at WCC or through accepted transfer hours, through Fall 2010 Semester:

  • 45 hours or more: 8:00am
  • 30 hours or more: 11:00am
  • 15 hours or more: 1:00pm
  • Less than 15 hours: 3:00pm

You’re a current student if you took credit classes at WCC in any semester from Spring/Summer 2009 to Winter 2011. You’re a readmitted student if you took classes more than two years ago and have reactivated your file by completing the online application again.

Registration for new students starts at 9:00am on Wednesday, March 23. New students must submit an online application and be admitted before they can register.

Students Urged to Register Early

Students should register as early as possible to ensure the greatest selection of classes. During the previous Spring/Summer Semester, more than 9,200 students enrolled at WCC.

WCC offers classes during the day, at night, on weekends, online, and in a blended format that combines online and classroom instruction. Classes are available at WCC’s main campus and at extension centers in Brighton, Dexter, Hartland, and Ypsilanti.

Students register for credit classes online. If you need access to a computer or help with registering, visit WCC’s Student Connection on the second floor of the Student Center building. If you have questions about registering, call the Student Connection at 734-973-3543.

Deadlines Are Approaching

A number of deadlines related to registration are coming up:

  • April 14, 10:00pm: Deadline to pay tuition if you register between March 16 and April 14. Registration continues after April 14, with later payment deadlines tied to the date you register.
  • April 15: Fill out your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) by now to have the best chance of getting aid approved before the semester begins.
  • May 5, 6:00pm: Deadline to register for Spring/Summer Semester classes that start May 9.
  • May 29, 6:00pm: Deadline to register for Spring/Summer Semester classes that start May 31. Please note that registration is only available online May 28-29.
  • June 13, 6:00pm: Deadline to register for Spring/Summer Semester classes that start June 15.

See a Counselor

WCC strongly encourages students to see a counselor before registering for classes. Walk-in counseling at Counseling & Career Planning is available Monday through Thursday from 8:00am to 6:30pm and Friday from 8:00am to 5:00pm. The office is located on the second floor of the Student Center building.

You can submit basic advising questions through the Internet and receive replies by email or phone. If you need more help and it’s hard for you to get to campus, you can use WCC’s real-time online advising service. Your computer needs a high-speed Internet connection, a webcam, and a microphone for you to take full advantage of the service.

Register for LifeLong Learning Classes

Registration for WCC’s LifeLong Learning continuing education classes also starts March 16. You do not have to be admitted to WCC to take the non-credit classes.

A schedule of LifeLong Learning classes will be available online starting March 16. You can register for LifeLong Learning classes online, by mail, or in person at the Student Connection.
