Registration Starts July 13 for Fall 2011 Semester

Two changes are on tap when WCC students start registering for Fall Semester.

Fall registration begins on Wednesday, July 13, for current and readmitted students. Registration for new students starts one week later on Wednesday, July 20.

A schedule of credit classes is available on WCC’s website. Fall Semester starts Aug. 26 and ends Dec. 16.

The first change affects students who receive financial aid. Under new federal regulations, they must verify their academic program to continue receiving aid. Students can verify their program by logging into MyWCC and following the directions.

Students who receive financial aid must verify their program by July 29 to avoid any delays in their financial aid. Students who fail to verify will not receive financial aid for the Fall Semester and will be dropped from their classes.

All students can use the Program Verification/Change page to change their academic program online. Previously, students had to make any changes in person on campus.

The second change affects students who will take math classes. All students have an Academic Math Level, which establishes the math classes they can take. Most students have their level set through taking the COMPASS assessment test.

Beginning in Fall Semester, students who don’t take a math class for a year after their Academic Math Level is set must take COMPASS again. This requirement also applies to students who let a year or more pass between math classes.

“You really want to start your math as soon as you come in,” said Kathy Currie, director of student records. “You don’t want to put off taking your math.” Many students must take a sequence of math classes. Students who don’t get started early can reach their final semester only to find they still have math classes to take, Currie said. This delays their graduation.

Online Tools Help Streamline Registration

Students have several online tools to help them build their schedules through MyWCC, where students register for classes:

  • The WCC Schedule Planner lets students type in classes they want and block out times they’re unavailable, and then produces possible class schedules.
  • The Program Requirements and Degree Audit allows student to see which classes they still must take to earn a degree.
  • The Course Prerequisite Check lets students check prerequisites for a class and, if they feel that they meet them, apply for a prerequisite override online.

Registration Times are Staggered

Current and readmitted students have staggered registration start times on July 13. The times are based on the overall number of credit hours earned, either at WCC or through accepted transfer hours, through Winter Semester 2011:

  • 45 hours or more: 8:00am
  • 30 hours or more: 11:00am
  • 15 hours or more: 1:00pm
  • Less than 15 hours: 3:00pm

You’re a current student if you took credit classes at WCC in any semester from Fall 2009 to Spring/Summer 2011. You’re a readmitted student if you took classes more than two years ago and have reactivated your file by completing the online application again.

Registration for new students starts at 9:00am on Wednesday, July 20. New students must submit an online application and be admitted before they can register.

New and readmitted students also must come into WCC to present documents that verify their identity and residency before they can register. Students should bring in their documents as soon as possible after their application is processed. The requirement does not apply to current students.

Students Urged to Register Early

Students should register as early as possible to get the best selection of classes. During Fall Semester 2010, nearly 14,200 students enrolled at WCC.

WCC offers classes during the day, at night, on weekends, online, and in a blended format that combines online and classroom instruction. Classes are available at WCC’s main campus, at extension centers in Brighton, Dexter, and Ypsilanti, and at Mason Hall on the U-M campus in Ann Arbor.

Students register for credit classes online. If you need access to a computer or help with registering, visit WCC’s Student Connection on the second floor of the Student Center building. If you have questions about registering, call the Student Connection at 734-973-3543.

Deadlines are Approaching

A number of deadlines related to registration are coming up:

  • July 29: Deadline for students who receive financial aid to verify their academic program to avoid any delays in receiving aid.
  • July 30: Deadline for the Financial Aid office to receive a student’s FAFSA information from the federal government.
  • Aug. 19, 5:00pm: Deadline for applying for admission or readmission.
  • Aug. 23: Deadline for completing in-person orientation.
  • Aug. 24, noon: Deadline for being in the Testing Center to take the COMPASS assessment test.
  • Aug. 24, 6:00pm: Deadline for registering for Fall Semester classes that start Aug. 27.

See a Counselor

WCC strongly encourages all students to see a counselor before registering for classes. Walk-in counseling at Counseling & Career Planning is available Monday through Thursday from 8:00am to 6:30pm and Friday from 8:00am to 5:00pm.

You can submit basic advising questions through the Internet and receive replies by email or phone. If you need more help and it’s hard for you to get to campus, you can use WCC’s real-time online advising service. Your computer needs a high-speed Internet connection, a webcam, and a microphone for you to take full advantage of the service.

Register for LifeLong Learning Classes

Registration for WCC’s LifeLong Learning continuing education classes also starts July 13. You do not have to be admitted to WCC to take the non-credit classes.

A schedule of LifeLong Learning classes will be available online starting July 13. You can register for LifeLong Learning classes online, by mail, or in person at the Student Connection.
