WCC Journalists Win 52 Awards

For the second year in a row, WCC’s student newspaper, The Washtenaw Voice, won the General Excellence Award for best overall student newspaper at the Michigan Community College Press Association conference. Industry professionals from across Michigan served as judges for the recent conference in Mt. Pleasant.

Twenty-three WCC student journalists received 52 awards in 30 categories, including news writing, photography, design, and multimedia. The Voice staff placed second in the headline category and third in multimedia reporting, and was an honorable mention for in-depth and First Amendment reporting.

Individual WCC winners include:

  • Mike Adsit: Honorable mention, original cartoon/entertainment
  • Jared Angle: First, in-depth reporting, photo essay; third, news photo, video production/audio slideshow; honorable mention, sports feature photo
  • Karen Before: Second, First Amendment reporting
  • Kate Bizer: Honorable mention, informational graphic/illustration
  • Josh Chamberlain: First, column/serious, image page design; second, overall page design; honorable mention, critical review, front page design
  • Nathan Clark: Second, column/humor
  • Bob Conradi: First, personality profile; third, sports feature photo; honorable mention, photo essay, feature photo, blog
  • Quinn Davis: Second, editorial; third, in-depth reporting
  • Chuck Denton: First, feature story
  • Matt Durr: Third, news story, in-depth reporting; honorable mention, personality profile, sports news story, sports column, sports news photo
  • Ikram Fatah: First, online newspaper
  • Anna Fuqua-Smith: Second, sports column; honorable mention, sports feature story, news photo
  • Jocelyn Gotlib: Honorable mention, inside page design
  • Adrian Hedden: First, news story; second, First Amendment reporting; third, photo essay; honorable mention, news photo
  • James Highsmith: Third, sports column
