WCC hosts Michigan House subcommittee roundtable May 20

WCC was selected to host the next meeting of the Michigan House of Representatives Community College Subcommittee on Appropriations. The subcommittee convenes on campus Monday, May 20, and a public roundtable begins at 12:30pm in Room 150 of the Morris Lawrence building.

WCC President Rose B. Bellanca will testify regarding veteran student services, workforce development initiatives, and the College’s efforts to address developmental education needs.

“This is a wonderful opportunity to showcase Washtenaw Community College as a premier institution,” said Bellanca. “It is also an honor to advocate on behalf of our students and community directly to our legislators.”

Members of the House and Senate appropriations subcommittees, along with several Washtenaw County legislators, will attend Monday’s roundtable. They are charged with allocating crucial state dollars to the 28 community colleges across Michigan.

Michigan’s community colleges enroll about 495,000 students annually, according to a 2012 House Fiscal Agency report. WCC serves more than 20,000 students each year, and annually awards over 2,000 certificates and degrees in more than 120 programs.
