WCC hosts career event June 27

WCC, the Washtenaw County Michigan Works Agency, and the Washtenaw County Office of Community and Economic Development have partnered to present the first Washtenaw County Career Expo on Thursday, June 27. The event takes place from 9:00am to 3:00pm at the WCC Morris Lawrence building. Participation is free and limited to the first 100 job seekers who pre-register.

According to WCC Interim Career Services Director Ross Gordon, the Expo is geared for individuals who are ready to work but lack insight and interaction specific to their chosen career field.

“This is not a job fair,” Gordon said. “It is intended for job seekers on the cusp of employment who need a little more information to identify their options. We are strongly encouraging recent WCC graduates and Michigan Works clients to attend.”

The day begins with a brief networking opportunity with light refreshments, followed by an employment outlook for southeast Michigan presented by the Workforce Intelligence Network of Southeast Michigan. Participants will then choose two of five workshops to attend. They include:

  • Labor Market Information—Job Search 101
  • Resume Development
  • Job Hunting Strategies
  • Talent Portal
  • Interview Skills

An interactive luncheon/discussion will be presented by Dress For Success. It is followed by breakout sessions with industry experts from the area.

“This is an excellent example of how Washtenaw Community College is meeting the changing needs of our community,” said Dr. Rose B. Bellanca, WCC president. “Increasing our ability to respond quickly to this dynamic environment is one of our top strategic priorities.”

Shamar Herron, OCED workforce development manager, said: “Michigan Works and the Office of Community and Economic Development are consistently working to build strategic partnerships that will enhance the opportunities available to Washtenaw County jobseekers. The Career Expo is just one example of the benefits jobseekers can expect to see.”

Participation is limited to the first 100 people who RSVP before June 26 at careers@wccnet.edu or 734-677-5155.
