WCC welcomes Ironworkers back to campus for Instructor Training Program

The Ironworkers are back, bringing with them more than 825 people to the state-of-the-art training facilities at Washtenaw Community College and an estimated economic impact of up to $5 million to Washtenaw County.

For the ninth consecutive year, the Ironworkers union – officially The International Association of Bridge, Structural, Ornamental and Reinforcing Iron Workers – is holding its Instructor Training Program at WCC.

Rock & roll, blues author Jas Obrecht brings Music Journalism class to WCC

Back in November 1978, a young music journalist named James “Jas” Obrecht introduced the world to an up-and-coming musician named Eddie Van Halen, who was on the verge of revolutionizing rock n’ roll guitar playing.

Since that story for Guitar Player magazine, Obrecht built an award-winning, 40-year career writing music books, feature stories, scholarly articles and reviews while also spending the last 16 years as a Creative Writing and Advanced Composition instructor at Washtnenaw Community College.

WCC Foundation board names new president, four new members

The Washtenaw Community College Foundation recently announced a new Chairman of its Board of Directors and the addition of four new board members. Their terms began July 1, 2018.

The Board of Directors is comprised of community leaders who volunteer their time to advance the Foundation’s mission of providing support to WCC students through scholarships and other philanthropic support, creating a better educated workforce and a stronger community.

WCC and United Association Celebrate 20 Years of Training

A milestone will be celebrated when the United Association Instructor Training Program convenes at Washtenaw Community College August 8-14. This year marks the 20th anniversary of an educational partnership that has served almost 30,000 new and returning instructors-in-training for the United Association of Journeymen and Apprentices of the Plumbing and Pipe Fitting Industry of the United States and Canada.

IT Professionals Camp Out at WCC for Charity

Camping at a community college? Though classrooms and computer labs may not be a traditional camper’s idea of a fun summer weekend, they were the ideal place for 70 software developers, designers, and database administrators who donated their time to create custom software and websites for 14 non-profit organizations.

Need help paying for child care while you attend classes this fall? WCC’s Student Resource and Women’s Center offers child care scholarships that cover part of the cost for on-campus or off-campus care.

WCC Students Win Gold, Silver at National Championships

WCC students in skilled trades programs won a total of four gold medals and one silver medal at the SkillsUSA Championships in Kansas City June 24-25. WCC was one of the top winners at the event, which pitted state champions from around the country against each other.

WCC’s Literary Community Highlighted in Journal

The latest edition of the Huron River Review, WCC’s award-winning literary journal, has just been published. The eighth edition is a 160-page glossy montage of prose, poetry, photography, and illustrations. Contributors come from all walks of life at WCC: students, staff, and faculty, both active and retired.
