WCC, Michigan Medicine launch Service Desk Apprenticeship Progam

Apprenticeships are typically associated with the skilled trades. You might first think of a plumber or electrician apprentice? Or maybe a welder or carpenter?

That convention is changing and a recent apprenticeship program created by Washtenaw Community College to help Michigan Medicine attract and train aspiring information technology professionals is advancing the cause.

WCC cuts ribbon on nursing labs, celebrates Center of Excellence distinction

Michigan Governor Rick Snyder was among the dignitaries that helped Washtenaw Community College celebrate its national Center of Excellence in Nursing Education designation and cut the ribbon on its new nursing simulation laboratories at a special ceremony held Thursday evening.

“The impact that the School of Nursing has on the community it serves is extraordinary,” Snyder said.

Students get glimpse into cybersecurity thanks to WCC instructors

The Square One Education Network recently called on Washtenaw Community College to showcase its new instrument that allows interactive learning to help stifle hacking in the auto industry.

On display for a few dozen high school students – mostly from districts in the Metro Detroit area – was WCC’s new mobile hacking workbench, a replica of a vehicle’s complete communication and computer systems.

Record WCC Enrollment Means Record Parking Headache

This fall, roughly 14,000 students will cruise the Washtenaw Community College parking lots hoping to snag one of the 3,000 spots available. If you’re among the record number of students enrolled this semester, parking will be a big challenge. That is why students and College staff are urged to ride Ann Arbor Transportation Authority buses to school.

Registration Deadline Nears for Fall 2009 Semester

Students who haven’t registered yet for Fall Semester should do so as soon as possible to get the best selection of classes, according to Larry Aeilts, WCC’s registrar. Registering right away is especially important because WCC is experiencing a sharp increase in enrollment.

Dream Machine is a Hit at Dream Cruise

WCC’s Dream Machine, a “clone” of the 1967 Mustang GT nicknamed Eleanor from the movie “Gone in 60 Seconds,” was one of the most popular cars at the recent Woodward Dream Cruise. Students in the Custom Cars & Concepts (CCC) program are building the car for Detroit radio station WCSX as part of the Dream Machine charity raffle.

WCC Moves Western Region Classes to Chelsea for Fall

Washtenaw Community College credit classes originally scheduled at Dexter High School for the Fall 2009 Semester will meet instead on the campus of Chelsea Community Services at 500 Washington St. in Chelsea. Construction at Dexter High School was a factor in the decision.

WCC and United Association Celebrate 20 Years of Training

A milestone will be celebrated when the United Association Instructor Training Program convenes at Washtenaw Community College August 8-14. This year marks the 20th anniversary of an educational partnership that has served almost 30,000 new and returning instructors-in-training for the United Association of Journeymen and Apprentices of the Plumbing and Pipe Fitting Industry of the United States and Canada.

IT Professionals Camp Out at WCC for Charity

Camping at a community college? Though classrooms and computer labs may not be a traditional camper’s idea of a fun summer weekend, they were the ideal place for 70 software developers, designers, and database administrators who donated their time to create custom software and websites for 14 non-profit organizations.
