Hire MI Vet holding fifth annual hiring event at WCC

Washtenaw Community College is co-hosting a networking event and job fair on Tuesday, Nov. 5 with Hire MI Vet, a community initiative developed to help veterans find meaningful employment. The event, which will take place in the Morris Lawrence Building on WCC’s main campus, is designed to connect local veterans and their families with more than 30 veteran-friendly employers.

WCC faculty member presenting her experience growing up behind the Iron Curtain

When the Berlin Wall fell in November 1989, signaling the end of the Cold War, East German-born Elisabeth Thoburn was living in Michigan. She met an American exchange student a decade earlier, fell in love, was married and moved to the United States in 1985.

“That was a very difficult thing. I literally had to watch something on television that I wish I had been in the middle of,” says the 25-year Washtenaw Community College faculty member.

With Business Enterprise program, students build education around their careers

Washtenaw Community College is turning business education upside down with the introduction of its new Business Enterprise program that can lead to a certificate, an advanced certificate, an associate degree and transfer opportunities to a four-year institution.

But, first and foremost, it’s focused on helping students advance in their career. The focus is on skill building for entry-level employment. From there, the student can build their education around what they experience on-the-job and choose to pursue.

IT Professionals Camp Out at WCC for Charity

Camping at a community college? Though classrooms and computer labs may not be a traditional camper’s idea of a fun summer weekend, they were the ideal place for 70 software developers, designers, and database administrators who donated their time to create custom software and websites for 14 non-profit organizations.

WCC Students Win Gold, Silver at National Championships

WCC students in skilled trades programs won a total of four gold medals and one silver medal at the SkillsUSA Championships in Kansas City June 24-25. WCC was one of the top winners at the event, which pitted state champions from around the country against each other.

WCC’s Literary Community Highlighted in Journal

The latest edition of the Huron River Review, WCC’s award-winning literary journal, has just been published. The eighth edition is a 160-page glossy montage of prose, poetry, photography, and illustrations. Contributors come from all walks of life at WCC: students, staff, and faculty, both active and retired.

Deadline Nears for Montreal Film Festival Adventure

Once again, Washtenaw Community College is offering an opportunity to attend the Montreal World Film Festival, which will be held Sept. 3-7. The July 9 registration deadline is fast approaching for one of North America’s premier cinematic events.
