Rock & roll, blues author Jas Obrecht brings Music Journalism class to WCC

Back in November 1978, a young music journalist named James “Jas” Obrecht introduced the world to an up-and-coming musician named Eddie Van Halen, who was on the verge of revolutionizing rock n’ roll guitar playing.

Since that story for Guitar Player magazine, Obrecht built an award-winning, 40-year career writing music books, feature stories, scholarly articles and reviews while also spending the last 16 years as a Creative Writing and Advanced Composition instructor at Washtnenaw Community College.

WCC Foundation board names new president, four new members

The Washtenaw Community College Foundation recently announced a new Chairman of its Board of Directors and the addition of four new board members. Their terms began July 1, 2018.

The Board of Directors is comprised of community leaders who volunteer their time to advance the Foundation’s mission of providing support to WCC students through scholarships and other philanthropic support, creating a better educated workforce and a stronger community.

Second time's a charm: WCC student brings home silver medal at SkillsUSA

LOUISVILLE, Kentucky - Washtenaw Community College student Ashlea Carravallah took home a silver medal from the 54th Annual SkillsUSA national championships on Friday at the Kentucky Exposition Center.

Carravallah earned her second-place finish in her second year of competing against 28 other state champions in the Automotive Refinishing Technology competition. She finished 10th last year, but used that year of experience to boost her score to 904 out of a possible 1,000 points this year.

ANN ARBOR, MICH., September 19, 2017 – The Washtenaw Community College Board of Trustees has approved a resolution establishing a law enforcement agency for the college. The resolution established a public safety advisory committee and granted law enforcement authority to WCC campus resource officers.

A Washtenaw Community College student has earned a prestigious Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship.

WCC brings workforce development to American Center for Mobility

ANN ARBOR, Mich., May 31, 2017 – Washtenaw Community College is allying a consortium of community colleges to develop training for skilled professionals at the American Center for Mobility (ACM). The college is opening an office on the ACM campus to work with employers on the development of connected and automated vehicles. The office is expected to open in June.

Changes in general education requirements to help WCC transfer students succeed

Washtenaw Community College has changed the general education requirements in all of its associate degree programs to better align the college with the requirements of the Michigan Transfer Agreement.

UA wraps up annual instructor training, WCC welcomes 11 new alumni

Wrapping up another successful week of training at Washtenaw Community College, United Association General President Mark McManus called the 1,835 union members who traveled to Ann Arbor for the annual Instructor Training Program the backbone and the future of an organization that represents more than 343,000 plumbers, pipefitters, sprinkler fitters, steam fitters, welders and service techs across the United States and Canada.
