WCC DJs Passionate About Music and Orchard Radio

It’s 2:45 on a Wednesday afternoon and Stephanie Mae is reminding her 450 Facebook friends that she’ll be on the air at Orchard Radio in 15 minutes. Mike Pickett and his buddy, Matt Gilson, are on the mics behind her rehashing the Tigers’ heartbreaking loss the day before and the controversy surrounding star slugger Miguel Cabrera. They are surrounded by posters of Led Zeppelin, Rob Zombie, and Pillar of Autumn, among others, and are oblivious to the parade of students, faculty, and staff walking past the half-wall windows that give them a birds-eye view of the Student Center first floor.

Lecture Reflects on Berlin Wall 20 Years Later

On Nov. 9, 1989, the world watched as the Berlin Wall, that impenetrable symbol of the Cold War, fell when East Germans flooded through an opened checkpoint. WCC art history instructor Elisabeth Thoburn, who lived behind the Iron Curtain for 25 years, will give a lecture at WCC on that historical event and its impact on Dresden, the town where she grew up.

WCC’s Oldest Building Celebrates 40 Years of Learning

As you look down the pristine halls of WCC’s Technical & Industrial building and beyond the students walking briskly to class, you can almost feel the excitement that heralded its inaugural semester 40 years ago in January 1970. Today, TI is a thriving new environment for a diverse array of disciplines and non-traditional learning programs.

WCC Welder Joe Young Takes Silver in International Competition

Last fall, state welding champ and WCC student Joe Young missed the cut to compete for a world title when he placed fifth in the SkillsUSA national welding competition. Though he felt that his welds had hit their mark and were worthy of at least third place, the Las Vegas judges saw it differently.

Car and Motorcycle Show Roars Into WCC

Editor's Note: Congratulations to Tom Gents of Illinois, the new owner of the Dream Machine. The Dream Machine raffle raised about $25,000 each for two charities: the National Kidney Foundation of Michigan and The Salvation Army's Staples Family Center.

WCC Students Conduct Real-World Research

This week WCC rolls out new pages on its award-winning website that highlight three non-traditional ways to take classes: online, in a blended format that combines online and classroom learning, and on weekends.

Record WCC Enrollment Means Record Parking Headache

This fall, roughly 14,000 students will cruise the Washtenaw Community College parking lots hoping to snag one of the 3,000 spots available. If you’re among the record number of students enrolled this semester, parking will be a big challenge. That is why students and College staff are urged to ride Ann Arbor Transportation Authority buses to school.

Registration Deadline Nears for Fall 2009 Semester

Students who haven’t registered yet for Fall Semester should do so as soon as possible to get the best selection of classes, according to Larry Aeilts, WCC’s registrar. Registering right away is especially important because WCC is experiencing a sharp increase in enrollment.
