WCC Students Assist With U-M Research

Eight WCC students became University of Michigan research assistants this summer through a 10-week program sponsored by the university.

WCC Nursing Student Awarded Red Cross Scholarship

WCC nursing student Kristopher L. Thompson has been awarded a 2012 Jane Delano Student Nurse Scholarship by the American Red Cross. He is one of three students nationwide and the only community college student to receive the honor.

Jeremy Liesen’s category was one of the last as the 34th Michigan Emmy Award ceremony drew to a close June 16. Suddenly his name was announced. The next thing he heard was his mother shouting, “Jeremy you won, you won!”

Richelle Cook, a student in WCC’s auto body repair program, is one of 17 students nationwide—and the only community college student in Michigan—to receive a Student Tool Grant from the Craftsman brand.

WCC Ranked Ninth in Engineering-Related Degrees

Community College Week magazine has ranked WCC ninth out of 50 colleges across the country in the number of associate degrees awarded to students in engineering technologies and engineering-related fields. WCC also ranked eighth in the number of one-year certificates granted in all categories. The distinctions are based on 2011 data.

For the second year in a row, WCC’s student newspaper, The Washtenaw Voice, won the General Excellence Award for best overall student newspaper at the Michigan Community College Press Association conference. Industry professionals from across Michigan served as judges for the recent conference in Mt. Pleasant.

U.S. Rep. John Dingell to Receive WCC Honorary Degree

Congressman John Dingell (D-Mich.) has been named the first recipient of a WCC honorary degree. He will receive an honorary associate degree in community service at commencement on Saturday, May 19. The ceremony, which will honor 3,049 degree and certificate candidates, begins at 9:20am at Eastern Michigan University’s Convocation Center.

Three talented WCC student chefs competed recently in culinary competition and returned to campus victorious.

Summer Job Pays Off For Two WCC Students

Last summer it was all about the work for two talented WCC welders. Brandon Woodman and Alex Pazkowski, students in the WCC welding program, were hired by Triune Manufacturing Company in Madison Heights, Mich., to help fabricate an educational experience on wheels.
