  4. If an exact date is not given, look for a clue such as "published this year" or "published recently" to get an approximate date.
  5. Also, look for the name of a researcher connected with the research study.
  6. Highlight the name of the research journal and its publication date, the researchers name, and some of the article's key words to use when you search for the original research in Part B of this assignment.
PART B: FINDING THE RESEARCH ARTICLE
  1. In your printed copy of the popular article from Part A, be sure you have highlighted the research journal name and date, the researchers and keywords on which to search.
  2. Go back to the Library home page and click on "Find Articles."
  3. On the screen you will see a category called Related Databases; under that heading you will see WCC Journals List. Click on it. At this point you will be prompted to enter your student ID number.
  4. On the next screen use the pull down menu on the left until "Title equals" appears in the white box. In the white box to the right of that, type the name of the research journal and click on search.
  5. The resulting screen will give you a list of the WCC Research Databases that contain the full text of the research journal for which you are looking. From that list, choose one of these three databases and click on it: "General OneFile," "PsycArticles," or "EBSCOHost."
  6. An explanation of how to use each of these databases to find a research article is given below.
Instructions for using PsycArticles database to find a research article:
  1. After you have clicked on PsycArticles on the WCC Journals page, you will get a screen that has issue dates for your chosen research journal. IGNORE these issue dates and click on the ADVANCED SEARCH at the top of the screen.
  2. You will see three rows of white boxes.
Here are suggestions for these rows:
    1. In the first row, type the research journal name and then go to the pull down menu at the end of the row and click on Source.
    2. In the second row, type the last name of your author and then go to the pull down menu at the end of the row and click on Author.
    3. In the third row, type the calendar year date of the article and then go to the end of the row and click on Publication Year. Then click on Search.
  3. The next screen typically will have citations for several articles. Each citation will have the title of a research article and a list of its authors. It will also have a 3 or 4 line excerpt from the article.
  4. Choose the citation that matches the information from your popular article.
  5. Print the research article.
If these suggestions dont work, be creative! For example, try clicking on Add A Row. After a new row of boxes appears, try typing in a keyword and then pulling down Keywords from the pull down menu. Another example would be to try a string of 2 or 3 keywords in a row, such as "TV" or "television."

Instructions for using General OneFile database to find a research article:
  1. After you have clicked on General OneFile on the WCC Journals page, you will get a General OneFile screen that has issue dates for your chosen research journal. IGNORE these issue dates and click on the ADVANCED SEARCH at the top of the screen.

    3. In the third row, click on Publication Date in the pull down menu and type the publication year (just the year) in the white box. Then click on Search.
  3. The next screen typically will have citations for several articles. Each citation will have the title of a research article and a list of its authors.
  4. Choose the citation that matches the information from your popular article.
  5. If the citation information isn't complete enough, you may need to click on Full Text under one or more citations so you can determine which citation actually leads to the research article you want.
If these suggestions don't work, be creative! For example, try clicking on Add A Row. After a new row of boxes appears, choose Keyword from the pull down menu and then type one of your chosen keywords. Another example would be to go to your original rows of boxes and then delete the author information in order to substitute a keyword.

  3. On the next screen type your keywords from your popular article in the Search box and click on Go.
  4. Once a list of articles appears on the next screen, find your chosen article by looking at article titles, authors, and dates of issues.
