Books for ESL Students
The content of these books is intended for adults, but the reading level is scaled for those with limited English proficiency.

A library catalog subject search on readers will bring up almost 900 titles of this kind of book. For the student who wants to browse these books, the books can be found in the PE1117 section of the library.

Some of these books were originally published in a regular English edition. In such cases the original versions have been made “ESL friendly” by being retold by different authors who try to capture the essence of the material while lowering the English level. An example is East of Eden by John Steinbeck as retold by Mary Gladwin PE 1117 P46 G5 E2 2001. (The original version of East of Eden by John Steinbeck is also in our collection at PZ3 S8195 EAS.)

Other books for ESL students found in the PE 1117 area were originally written for an ESL audience. An example is The Amazon Rain Forest by Bernard Smith PE 1117 P42 S6 A4 2005.

Many books in the PE1117 section have accompanying cassette tapes or CD’s. These materials are kept at the Users’ Services Desk and are offered to the student for check-out along with the book.

Books for ESL Students: Categorized by Reading Level
Access to almost 300 of the books in PE1117 can be gained by choosing the desired reading level. A librarian will help you do a library catalog power search to find first the series’ name and then the reading level. Two series you can find this way are the Penguin Readers series and the Cambridge English Readers series.

Getting to the online lists of these series involves several clicks on links on the library catalog web page.
  1. For the Penguin series the reference librarian will help you get from Find Books to Power Search to Browse to penguin readers level to series. You may then need to click on the tab called “Previous” to get the pertinent screen. You will find 22 books at Reading Level 1, 51 books at Reading Level 2, 38 books at Level 3, etc.
  2. (2) For the Cambridge English readers series the reference librarian will help you get from Find Books to Power Search to Browse to Cambridge English readers to series. You will find 13 books at Level 1, 12 books at Level 3, etc.

Books: Preparation for English Language Examinations
The books in the PE1128 section of the library prepare students for the TOEFL, MELAB, and other language examinations. You can browse among them or do a subject search in the library catalog on English language - Examinations - Study guides.

Here are several representative titles from among many:
  • PE 1128.S7 2006 - The Official Guide to the New TOEFL iBT
  • PE 1128.S7 2005 - McGraw-Hill's TOEFL Computer-Based Test
