Employability Skills - Quick Tips
Resume Writing:
A resume is a marketing tool used to sell you to an employer. Its purpose is NOT to get you a job;
rather its purpose is to clearly state your objective, highlight your qualifications, skills and education and
describe your work experience so that an employer will offer you an interview. Your resume may be in either a
Chronological Resume format or a
Functional Resume format and should contain
positive action words
to describe your work experience. Your resume should be completely free of spelling or grammatical errors.

Interviewing Skills:
Prior to the interview you must research the company or organization that will
be interviewing you. You will also want to practice responses to the
typical interview questions so that
you can showcase your verbal skills during the interview. For the interview, be well groomed, dress appropriately,
know the location of the interview and leave in plenty of time. During the interview, act professionally,
converse with the interviewer by answering the questions thoroughly, but also by asking questions that you might
have about the organization based upon your research. Afterwards, send the interviewer a brief thank you note and
reiterate your interest in the position if you are still interested. Visit us in the Employment Services Center
for assistance in preparing for interviews.
Job Fairs:
The Employment Services Center hosts an annual Job Fair
that is normally held in late March. Usually over 50 employers attend. Prepare for the fair by knowing which companies will attend, research
those that interest you, and make notes for your use during the fair itself. Dress appropriately when you go.
What you wear to class is NOT appropriate attire for a job fair. Employers at job fairs expect applicants
to wear business clothing that is well pressed and neat. Be sure to visit the Employment Services Center
prior to the job fair to pick up some practical tips for job fair success. Additionally, sign up for one of our job fair workshops. Check the
upcoming workshop schedule
to see which one you can attend.
Job Search Techniques:
You can begin your job search by visiting the Employment Services Center. We have
job binders in our library with current job postings that have been provided to us by employers.
One of our Advisors will review your resume or cover letter with you, introduce you to
College Central Network,
our online job search tool, and show you other job search strategies. We also offer several workshops on this
topic every semester. Look at our upcoming workshop schedule
to see when they take place. You may also call us at
734-677-5155 to schedule an appointment with one of our advisors or to reserve a place in one of the workshops.
