Instructor Guide to Using the Testing Center

Thank you for choosing to use the Testing Center to administer your student examinations. We are committed to delivering excellent proctoring services ensure your students have an enjoyable testing experience. You are welcome to visit or call (734-477-8550) the Testing Center if you have any questions or concerns.

What are the Testing Center hours for instructors?

Monday - Friday 8:00 am - 8:50 pm
Saturday 9:00 am - 4:50 pm

How do I set up a test for my entire class?
  1. We ask that you enter information about your test into our Test Input Program (TIP). You can gain access to the TIP by visiting the Instructors’ Area within the Center. To ensure accuracy, you must enter test information at least 24 hours before the test is scheduled to begin. Please ask a proctor for assistance if you are not familiar with this process, we are here to help you.

Please note that tests should never or end on a Sunday or holiday, go beyond Testing Center hours, or run beyond the end of the semester. Please consult a calendar before listing your test dates.

To streamline the process, we recommended that you enter ALL tests for the semester into the TIP program at the beginning of the semester. That way, you will be guaranteed your optimum start and end dates.

  2. Please leave any paper test on the computer desk in the Instructors’ Area. On the first page, at the very top of the document, you should include the following information: your full name, the course code, and test number. You need to provide the Testing Center with as many tests as there are students in your class. Please double check the number of tests you have before leaving them in the Testing Center. If you are running a Blackboard test, please make sure it is set up in Blackboard before it is scheduled to begin. Please review the additional Instructions for Blackboard tests.

What do I do after my test has ended?

You should pick up your paper tests at the Testing Center after the scheduled end time. They will be bundled and placed on a shelf next to the Instructors’ Area. There will be a printout with your test, displaying the log-in and log-out dates & times for every student who took the test. You should pick up all test materials (used and unused) by the time grades are due at the end of each semester.

How do I extend a test's end date/time?

You can extend a test date and time by discussing the change with a proctor. You may come in person or call us at (734) 477-8550.

We do not give automatic extensions of test deadlines when the college is shut down (e.g., weather, power outages, water main break, etc.) by college administrators. You must contact us so we can extend test deadlines.

Can I pick up completed tests before the end date?

Yes, check in with a proctor and your completed exams will be counted and handed over. To ensure that we don’t erroneously identify tests as missing, please do not remove completed exams from the shelf without checking with a proctor.

How do I set up a makeup test for students who missed my test?
  1. Enter your test information into the Makeup Input Program (MIP) located in the Instructors’ Area.
  2. Record details about the test on a Make-up Test Instruction Slip.
  3. Put test documents in the incoming make-ups cabinet, in the folder marked with your last name. After the student has completed the make-up test the proctor will file the documents in the outgoing make-ups cabinet.

Can I convert a paper test into a computer test?

Yes, please review the following: Instructions for creating a "ParTest."

Are students allowed to take bathroom breaks during a test session?

Recently, we have documented several cases where students took unauthorized or extensive breaks while using the Testing Center. These situations create opportunities where students might acquire unauthorized test aids that may give them an unfair advantage. To mitigate this problem, we strongly discouraged instructors from authorizing any breaks. After all, students chose the time they start the test (during the instructor’s specified test period), so they could easily visit the restroom before testing.

To improve our ability to proctor exams and minimize the risk associated with breaks, all students will be notified by signage that breaks are not allowed in the Testing Center. The proctor will tell the student if he or she takes a break the test materials will be collected and the test will end. A note will be provided for the instructor to document the incident. Only individual students who have been specified by the instructor will be allowed to take authorized breaks. The instructor must enter the first and last name of the student into the Testing Information Program.
