WCC Partners With Iron Workers

WCC and the International Association of Bridge, Structural, Ornamental and Reinforcing Iron Workers have created an educational partnership with two components.

  • An apprentice competes in the column climbing event, which is part of the Outstanding Iron Worker Apprentice Competition.

First, WCC hosts the international union’s annual instructor training program. At least 700 people from around the U.S. and Canada attend the week-long event each July.

Second, WCC has partnered with Local 25 to provide online classes for its members that let them earn a certificate or associate degree in construction supervision. Earning these credentials can help union members expand their skills and advance in their careers.

WCC created the construction supervision degree exclusively for members of building trade unions. Members receive college credits for their apprenticeships that put them well on their way toward earning a degree.

More Training = Job Security

“Naturally, the greater number of courses and certifications you have earned, the more likely it is that there will always be jobs available to you. That means your education doesn’t—and shouldn’t—end once you complete your apprenticeship.”

Conquer Your Fear

“Overcome the intimidation of college and taking classes; you can do it. Set a school schedule and stick to it.”

Give It a Try

“I’ve never had a better staff to work with than the Washtenaw Community College mentors and educators. They made obtaining my college degree easier than I ever thought possible—you’d be crazy to pass up an opportunity like this. I wish all my Union Brothers and Sisters would give it a try.”
