April 28, 2022 Washtenaw Technical Middle College
Position title: English instructor and academic advisor
Start date: August 22, 2022
Salary range: $55,000 - $85,000
Description and responsibilities: Washtenaw Technical Middle College (WTMC) is a high school located on the campus of Washtenaw Community College. We support student success in college coursework and college completion by providing meaningful educational choices, individualized advising, and skill-based instruction. Applicants for this position should be comfortable moving fluently between the needs of a K-12 learning environment and the expectations of higher education.
This is a full-time position as English instructor and academic advisor. English teaching duties (75%) include teaching composition and argumentation, sentence-level writing skills, literature and drama, and non-academic “soft” skills like organization and professional communication. Teachers at WTMC enjoy the freedom to create curriculum, design elective courses, and collaborate with colleagues in a supportive and intellectually challenging environment.
Advising duties (25%) require an applicant who can form supportive relationships with students as they learn to navigate the complex world of college. Advising includes helping students learn to schedule courses and choose a college program, and serving as a point of contact for families. This role requires a high degree of interpersonal intelligence.
Required qualifications: Applicants must have a valid Michigan secondary teaching certificate in English or Language Arts (BA or BX). The ability to work collaboratively, to stay organized, and to use or learn schoolwide digital tools are absolute requirements for this position.
Strong candidates will have a personal or professional history that supports working with diverse cultures and the developmental needs of adolescents. Graduate work in English or experience teaching at the postsecondary level would also be an asset in the teaching role.
WTMC offers an excellent benefits package including the MPSERS retirement system; a 403(b) plan with matching funds; health, vision, and dental insurance; graduate tuition reimbursement; health and fitness center membership; and disability and life insurance.
Interested candidates may send or email a cover letter, three letters of recommendation, and a résumé by May 23, 2022 to:
