ACCUPLACER

The ACCUPLACER is a computerized test completed by students who plan to attend WCC. The test assesses the student's skill levels in reading and English (writing). The ACCUPLACER is not a pass or fail test, but helps the student and their counselor determine which classes are the best fit for their success.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What subjects does the ACCUPLACER Test cover?

Reading Comprehension - this test contains 22 questions. Some ask you to decide how two sentences are related. After reading various length passages, the student will answer questions.

Writing (Sentence Skills) - this test contains approximately 20 questions and measures your understanding of sentence structure - what makes a sentence complete and clear. Some questions deal with the logic of the sentence, and others with the relationships between two sentences.

  • Do ACCUPLACER scores affect acceptance into the college?
No. The ACCUPLACER test helps determine the classes that are the best fit for student success.
  • What should I bring to the ACCUPLACER test?
A picture ID (driver's license or a previous school ID) is required. You cannot test without a photo ID. Bringing your WCC @student ID number is also helpful.
  • Are there any study guides for ACCUPLACER?
    Yes.

Link to sample questions available here.
  • What do the ACCUPLACER results tell me?
The results help to determine the best classes for you based on the areas tested: reading comprehension and English (sentence skills). After you complete the test, the results will display on your screen and testing center staff will print them out. The scores will also post to your MyWCC account and are available to counselors/advisors for your advising appointment.
  • How long will the test take?
You should plan on 1-1/2 to 2 hours total to complete both the reading comprehension and sentence skills tests. Do not rush through the tests. Accurate course placement depends on an accurate view of your skills.
  • If I am a transfer student, do I have to take the placement tests?
Transfer students are not required to take the ACCUPLACER if they have earned at least 15 college credits with a 2.0 cumulative GPA from an accredited U.S. college or university.

Please note: A photo ID is required to take any of the Placement Tests. No exceptions!
