Residency

Review WCC residency status criteria below and learn how to change your WCC residency status or address.

Tuition is based on your WCC residency status, except for Distance Learning classes.  Distance Learning tuition is not based on residency status but is set at $103 per credit hour for ALL students.  Some tuition discounts are available in specific circumstances.

Veterans, as well as military staff transferred to Michigan, just need to present appropriate documentation to waive the 6-month Michigan residency requirement for themselves and dependents who reside with them.

See the 2014-2015 tuition chart for the current tuition rate.

New students with International residency who registered and paid for Fall 2014 semester by July 31, 2014, were granted the 2013-2014 tuition rate of $193 per credit hour for Fall 2014 semester only.  When they register for Winter 2015 semester, the new International rate of $225 will apply.

Aspects of Residency

  1. The residency of a student will be based on current and valid Driver's License, State ID or Passport.
  2. The legal residency of a student will be established using the address and other pertinent information submitted on the application and registration materials but will be verified by the College.
  3. The residency of minors (under 18) shall follow that of their parents or legal guardian. However, students under 18 who provide sufficient evidence that they are independently supporting themselves and reside in the Washtenaw Community College District may qualify as in-district residents regardless of their parent's residency status.
  4. The residency of any person, who may furnish funds for payment of College fees, (other than a parent or legal guardian with whom the minor resides) shall in no way affect the residency of the student.
  5. Veterans, as well as military staff transferred to Michigan, may present the appropriate military documentation by the WCC deadline and the 6-month Michigan residency requirement will be waived.  This extends to the dependents who reside with them.
  6. Students who live with and whose spouse is a legal resident of Washtenaw County or State of Michigan will obtain the residency status of their spouse.
  7. Students who live with and are dependent on a parent or a legal guardian who is a legal resident of Washtenaw County or State of Michigan will obtain the residency of the parent or legal guardian.
