Washtenaw Community College is hosting its fourth annual Juneteenth Celebration from
1-2:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 19 in the Morris Lawrence Building. All WCC students,
faculty, staff and the community are invited.
Juneteenth commemorates the emancipation of enslaved African Americans in the United
States. This day marks the anniversary of June 19, 1865, when Union soldiers arrived
in Galveston, Texas, with the news that the Civil War had ended and enslaved people
were now free — two and a half years after President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation.
Juneteenth is a celebration of freedom, resilience, and African American culture and
heritage.
The WCC celebration will feature:
- A special address by Dr. David M. Walton, Associate Professor of History, and African American and Africana Studies Coordinaator at Lincoln University of Missouri.
- A live musical performance by the WCC Jazz Ensemble with guest vocalist Andrica Underwood, a WCC alumnus.
- A lunch of pulled chicken, beef brisket, macaroni & cheese and baked beans.
