In 'Keep Up The Good Work,' local leaders discuss their relationship with Washtenaw Community College. The following was contributed by Ann Arbor Area Community Foundation President & CEO Shannon Polk.
Washtenaw Community College is one of the strongest engines of opportunity in our region. Its impact is felt not only in classrooms, but across our workforce, our nonprofit sector, and our local economy.
At the Ann Arbor Area Community Foundation, we see firsthand how WCC strengthens our community by expanding access to education, supporting career pathways, and opening doors for individuals and families at every stage of life.
Through this long-standing partnership, AAACF has awarded more than $2.2 million in grants and scholarships, including $1.6 million supporting more than 400 WCC students.
For the past 10 years, we have also proudly hosted our Annual Community Meeting at WCC’s Morris Lawrence Building, a reflection of the college’s role as a trusted convener and community hub.
WCC serves as both an entry point to higher education and a feeder to Michigan’s universities, helping students build momentum, transfer successfully, and pursue long-term career goals.
Supporting young people has always been central to AAACF’s mission. For 36 years, our Youth Council has empowered students across Washtenaw County to engage in philanthropy, leadership, and service, awarding more than $2 million in grants to youth-focused programs.
My own relationship with WCC is deeply personal. Being recognized as a Shero by the WCC Foundation was an honor that reflects the college’s commitment to equity, leadership, and lifting those who serve.
Supporting WCC means supporting our students, our workforce, and our shared future.
