Washtenaw Community College is hosting its fifth annual Juneteenth Celebration from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Thursday, June 18 in the Morris Lawrence Building (see campus map). All WCC students, faculty, staff and the community are invited to join us for this celebration.
An RSVP prior to June 11 is required. Due to limited capacity and catering arrangements, we cannot guarantee admission,
seating or meals for guests who have not registered in advance.
Juneteenth commemorates the emancipation of enslaved African Americans in the United States. This day marks the anniversary of June 19, 1865, when Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas, with the news that the Civil War had ended and enslaved people were now free — two and a half years after President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation. Juneteenth is a celebration of freedom, resilience, and African American culture and heritage.
The WCC celebration will feature:
- A special address by Yusef Bunchy Shakur, Executive Director of Michigan Roundtable for Just Communities.
- A live musical performance by the WCC Jazz Ensemble with guest vocalist Andrica Underwood, a WCC alumnus.
- A complimentary lunch will be served.
