WCCs honors convocation: a celebration of excellence

WCC students receive certificates at Honors Convocation.

For more than 20 years, Dr. John Rinke, director of support services, has coordinated the Honors Convocation ceremonies at Washtenaw Community College.

Dr. Rinke’s enthusiasm hasn’t worn off. Held twice a year, in January and May, the Honors Convocation recognizes academic excellence for students who acquire grade point averages of either 3.8 or higher (high honors) or 3.5 or higher (honors) over a set amount of semesters. At each ceremony, students graduating with Honors or High Honors are also recognized.

Families attend to share in recognition

“The Honors Convocation was started to recognize students who were excelling academically and, in particular, our part-time students,” said Rinke. “The ceremony is a joyous and memorable occasion that is enjoyed by our faculty, staff, administration and, most importantly, the families of our students.”

The May Honors Convocation recognized 1410 students– and several hundred were in attendance to receive their honors. The WCC Performance Ensemble set the tone with a wide variety of upbeat music performed under the direction of John E. Lawrence, chair of the performing arts department.

Welcoming remarks were made by WCC President Dr. Rose B. Bellanca, WCC Board Vice Chair Diana McKnight Morton and Interim Dean of Instruction Dr. William Abernethy. Brandon Tucker, dean of advanced technologies and public service careers, gave an inspirational speech congratulating the students on their high academic achievements and citing the importance of planning for the next step along their journey– educationally, personally and professionally.

“It really is a delight to watch each student cross the stage and see the pride and sense of accomplishment on their faces,” said Rinke. “It is in that moment that they realize the value and importance of their hard work and dedicated study, and we are honored to share the moment with them.”
