Providing education to all walks of life

After watching the transformation of a young acquaintance named David as a high school student in Washtenaw Community College’s dual enrollment program, Nicole D. Torbert, a vice president and private bank relationship manager at Key Bank in Ann Arbor, was inspired to learn more about the college.

“I was impressed by the opportunities David was given at WCC,” said Torbert. “He spoke very highly about the college and greatly benefitted from the ability to accumulate two years of college and his high school degree simultaneously.”

Torbert’s interest in the WCC Foundation grew when she listened to stories from Foundation scholarship winners at the annual WCC Foundation Corporate Appreciation Lunch in May.

As the scholarship recipients shared their success stories, Torbert knew she wanted to become involved in raising money to provide scholarships to WCC students with financial need. She joined the board last month and is in the beginning of her first three-year term.

“Washtenaw Community College plays an important part in our community, providing education and training to people in all walks of life,” said Torbert.

She added that the community as a whole benefits from the work of the Foundation as WCC graduates become skilled, educated workers who bring their talent and knowledge to business and industry and contribute to the strength of the local economy.

“I am fortunate to work for an organization that not only supports Washtenaw County from charitable perspective, but also supports their employee’s personal involvement in the community,” Torbert said. “I am excited to bring not just my experience and expertise to the WCC Foundation, but the collective perspective of my Key Bank colleagues as well.”
