Economic Club hosts ‘Impact of Artificial Intelligence on Healthcare’

The Washtenaw Economic Club will host a distinguished data scientist this week to speak about “The Current and Future Impact of Artificial Intelligence on Healthcare.”

Mohammad Ghassemi, Ph.D., will present at the Thursday, May 8 luncheon meeting at 11:30 a.m. in the Morris Lawrence Building on the Washtenaw Community College campus, 4800 E. Huron River Drive.

Dr. Ghassemi is a scientist and entrepreneur with extensive experience leading AI initiatives. He holds a Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in computer science, with a focus on AI. He is a founding partner at Ghamut Corporation, and was formerly a director of data science at S&P Global, and a strategic consultant with BCG.

He has more than 15 years of technical and strategic consulting experience working with many of the world’s largest organizations. Dr. Ghassemi also serves as a Professor of Computer Science at Michigan State University, where he leads the Human Augmentation and Artificial Intelligence Lab. His lab develops tools and systems that combine human and machine intelligence (A.I.) to solve problems that neither humans nor machines can solve as effectively alone.

Dr. Ghassemi’s accomplishments have earned him numerous national and international distinctions, including being named a National Scholar for Data and Technology Advancement by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), an AI Champion by AIMed, and three times a recipient of JPMorgan Chase's AI Research Excellence Award. He is the lead inventor on multiple U.S. patents and has authored more than 70 peer-reviewed scientific papers. His work has also been featured by prominent media outlets, including the BBC, NPR, The Wall Street Journal and Newsweek.

The Washtenaw Economic Club is an established forum for business leaders in the local community to gather together to identify and discuss economic issues that affect business, as well as ways in which economic analysis informs decision-making processes for the business community.
