Mary Anderson is originally from Minnesota, where she got her undergraduate degree in music education.
She taught middle school band there for nine years. After moving to Ann Arbor, she
received her MA in TESOL from Eastern Michigan University. She has found a lot of
similarities between teaching music and ESL, especially in that they both require
a lot of practice. Besides WCC, she also teaches ESL at Oakland Community College.
She lives with her husband and two teenage children in Ann Arbor, and likes gardening,
birdwatching and reading.
Betsy Foss has been teaching at Washtenaw since January, 2004. She has a B.A. in French and a Master’s of Information and Library Studies from the University of Michigan, as well as an MA in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages from Eastern Michigan University. In addition to French, Betsy has studied Spanish, Italian, and Mandarin Chinese. She finds great pleasure in learning new languages and being able to communicate with members of another culture as a result. Her goal is to help her students grow in confidence and ability as they study English and to help them have some fun as they learn! In her free time, she enjoys reading, watching movies, traveling, and taking walks with her husband and daughter.
Heather Zettelmaier has been teaching ESL at WCC since 2001. She has a Bachelor of Philosophy in Interdisciplinary
Studies from Miami University in Ohio, where she focused her degree on Eastern Europe
and Russia. She also attained a MA in TESOL and a Teaching Certificate in Secondary
Education (English) from Eastern Michigan University. Her overseas experiences include
an exchange year in former East Germany, a two-year Peace Corps tour in Lithuania,
and a year of teaching English in Russia. She became an ESL teacher because of the
importance that language learning has had on her life experiences and relationships.
Great teachers had an important role in her foreign language acquisition, and Heather
strives to maintain those standards of teaching in her own practices. Heather is married
with two boys and lives in Ypsilanti. She is an organist and pianist, and her hobbies
include reading, singing, swimming, and puppetry.

Anna Trujillo Sowards earned her BA in Religion from Pepperdine University in Malibu, CA (1987), and her
MA-TEFL at San Francisco State University in San Francisco, CA (1993). She has studied
Spanish, German, Greek, and Swahili. She has taught ESL in California and Kenya. Anna
has been teaching at WCC since January, 2002. She moved to Michigan after living in
Nairobi, Kenya, for 7 1/2 years. She is devoted to giving her best to the students
and has high standards for her students as well. She feels that learning English should
not only be for academic purposes but for practical, every day purposes as well. Her
hobbies are reading, sports, camping, travel, and cooking.
