Description and responsibilities: Washtenaw Technical Middle College (WTMC) is a high school located on the campus of Washtenaw Community College. We support student success in college coursework and college completion by providing meaningful educational choices, individualized advising, and skill-based instruction. Applicants for this position should be comfortable moving fluently between the needs of a K-12 learning environment and the expectations of higher education.
This is a full-time position as an academic instructor and advisor. Teaching duties (75%) will vary based on professional experience and training, and may include non-fiction reading skills, source analysis and media literacy, social studies content, English composition and argumentation, literature and drama, and non-academic soft skills like organization and professional communication. Teachers at WTMC enjoy the freedom to create curriculum, design elective courses, and collaborate with colleagues in a supportive and intellectually challenging environment.
Advising duties (25%) require an applicant who can form supportive relationships with students as they learn to navigate the complex world of college. Advising includes helping students learn to schedule courses and choose a college program, and serving as a point of contact for families. This role requires a high degree of interpersonal intelligence.
Required qualifications: Applicants must have a valid Michigan secondary teaching certificate either in Social Studies, English, or Language Arts. The ability to work collaboratively, to stay organized, and to use or learn schoolwide digital tools are absolute requirements for this position.
Strong candidates will have a personal or professional history that supports working with diverse students and understanding the developmental needs of adolescents in a college environment. Graduate work in social studies or English, or experience teaching at the postsecondary level, would also be an asset in the teaching role.
