Back to campus: Ensuring a sustainable start

June 11, 2021 Becky Andrews

In the coming months, the Facilities Management division will welcome many faculty and staff back to their respective spaces on campus. The Recycle Operations department is available to provide advice and support during this process. If you are planning on sorting your areas, here’s how to accomplish those tasks in the most sustainable way.

Becky Andrews, recycle operations manager, will be available to consult with any areas on campus and assist with shredding, sorting, reusing, recycling and composting.

Here are some key points to remember:

Recycle bins REDUCE: Please do not discard items that can still be used and do not go out of date.

REUSE: WCC’s property disposition and redistribution system redistributes, resells and donates large and small items that are still in working order such as appliances, equipment, furniture, breakroom items and other office items. Print a property disposition form.

REUSE FOOD: Food Gatherers will take unopened canned and dry goods in their original packaging and in good condition up to a year after their sell by date. Discover more about Food Gatherers.

RECYCLE: WCC’s recycle stations accept paper and card, clean bottles, cans and containers.

In addition, the recycle department can recycle packaging materials such as clean bubble wrap, rigid Styrofoam, packaging peanuts and plastic bags. Items must be in a separate bag or container next to the recycle bins with a “recycle” note added.

Broken items made of hard plastic (desk trays), metal (staplers) and e-waste (batteries, cords) can also be recycled, if placed in a separate container. Find out more about WCC’s recycling services.

Compost boxCOMPOST: Green compost caddies are already located in many breakrooms. Fresh fruits, vegetables, coffee grounds, tea bags and eggshells are acceptable items to be placed in the caddies.

If you don’t have a caddie and would like one, please contact Becky Andrews. Find out more about WCC’s composting system.

Thank you for contributing to WCC’s sustainability goals and for being part of our environmentally aware community.
