As spring arrives and we look ahead to Earth Day, there’s no better time to reconnect with our campus community and the systems that help us reduce waste, conserve resources, and build a more sustainable future.
The Facilities Management Recycle Operations Department is excited to offer guided sustainability tours of our Sustainable Materials Management systems—an opportunity for staff and student groups to explore how everyday actions contribute to meaningful environmental impact.

What You’ll See on the Tour
Participants will get an up-close look at several key areas of our program, including:
- Worm Composting System – Discover how food scraps are transformed into nutrient-rich compost through vermicomposting, and learn how this natural process supports soil health and waste reduction.
- Recycling Sorting Area – See firsthand how materials are separated, processed, and prepared for recycling, and gain a better understanding of what can (and cannot) be recycled.
- Materials Storage Area – Learn how we manage and track reusable and recyclable materials to maximize efficiency and minimize waste.
- Office Supply Redistribution – Explore how surplus items are redistributed within the campus community, extending their life and reducing unnecessary purchasing.
Why Join a Tour?
These tours are designed to foster:
- Community – Connect with others who want to learn more about sustainability.
- Participation – Learn simple, actionable ways to get involved.
- Education – Build a deeper understanding of how our systems work.
- Awareness & Promotion – Help spread the word and strengthen our collective impact.
Whether you’re new to sustainability efforts or already engaged, these tours offer valuable insight into the work happening behind the scenes—and how you can be a part of it.
