Meeting Minutes – WMTC Board of Directors
April 2, 2025
- Call to Order: The meeting was called to order by Chairman Muthig at 8:38 a.m.
- Roll Call: Chairman Muthig, Director Gensheimer, Director Richards-Schuster and Director Tawakkul. Director Miller observed virtually.
- Public or Staff Communications: There were none at this meeting.
- Featuring WTMC – Julee Boland Accreditation Update: On March 25 Julee Boland and Dean Covert attended virtually the 2023 – 2025 Accreditation Review for WTMC with Cognia. WTMC was given many high praises from the committee, and were told that our school is a special place, that they were inspired by the work we do, and that more school should be following our model. They mentioned how positive and welcoming our environment is at WTMC. Each WTMC staff member was involved in the work it took to prepare the information submitted to Cognia.
- Updates and Announcements: Our new WCC Board Liaison Eileen Peck was introduced to the group. Also introduced to the group was Anthony Williamson who will be joining the WTMC Board at our June meeting. Dean Covert went over the new State of Michigan Earned Sick Time Act which went into effect in February 2025.
- Consent Agenda: The Meeting Agenda, the February 2025 Board Meeting Minutes, the January 2025 Financials, the Board Policy Updates for Fall 2024, and the WTMC Graduation Requirements, were all approved. Director Tawakkul moved and Director Gensheimer seconded, the motion carried unanimously.
- Committee Reports: Finance Committee; Director Miller and Dean Covert will be meeting in May to work
on the budget. Governance Committee; nothing to report at this meeting. Policy Committee;
the committee met and reviewed the Fall 2024 Board Policy Updates from the Charter
Institute. AdHoc Software Committee; Director Gensheimer, nothing to report at this
meeting. AdHoc Board Gathering Committee; Director Richards-Schuster reported that
they are looking at a possible September date for the event. We are working on the
list of former Board Members to invite.
AdHoc Committee for the Dean’s evaluation: Chairman Muthig, Director Gensheimer, Director Jackson and Director Miller. They will be meeting in May. - Dean’s Reports: Dean Covert; WTMC saw a 9% increase in applications for 2025 – 2026 school. We have a fairly long waitlist, due to the large number of students applying. Our Accreditation went very well, and we were given the highest praises from Cognia. We have seen a 70% decrease in chronic absenteeism due to our Social Worker Emily Goslow working with students, and the reporting systems we have in place. Dean Covert serves as a Board Member for both the Middle College National Consortium, and the Michigan Early Middle. Dean Covert attended, and presented at the National Middle College Consortium in March.
- Board Topic for Discussion: Review of what the US Department of Education does, and does not do.
