Steps Toward Sustainability

Many of these programs have been practiced at WCC for years since they are also consistent with operating in an efficient, cost-effective manner. Some of these initiatives include…

  • Integrating awareness of the environment in courses across the curriculum including Automotive Service, Anthropology, Biology, Chemistry, Construction, Culinary Arts, English, Environmental Science, Geology, Graphic Design, Industrial Technology, Nursing, Photography, and Sociology.
  • Educating faculty through professional development sessions on sustainability in the curriculum.
  • Setting a goal to become carbon neutral by 2060 through participation in the Second Nature Carbon Commitment.
  • By Board policy, constructing and remodeling buildings to meet LEED Silver certification or better.
  • Installing energy and water conserving equipment and fixtures in existing buildings.
  • Primarily using “green cleaning” products and low volatile organic compound (VOC) paints and carpeting.
  • Encouraging the use of public transportation, car pooling, electric cars, walking, and cycling.
  • Minimizing waste by recycling paper, cardboard, containers, scrap metal, construction materials, e-waste and many other materials, and composting food preparation waste.
  • Using native plant landscaping in certain areas of the campus.
  • Collaborating with local governments and community organizations on sustainability projects.
